Derbyshire frustration
Discussion
Had a ride out to Matlock/Derbyshire over the weekend, and couldn’t believe the speed changes. The limits seem to be all 40‘s and then where the NSL used to be they have dropped it to 50. The drive was dead frustrating, even the towns seemed to be 40 limits so it was mile upon mile of cars doing mid 40‘s. All the roads were double white lines even where it was safe to overtake. Finally got to Matlock(with the bike overheating) and found it full of old gits. Took the B roads back to Nottingham (NSL) and had quite a blast with no cars on them. The only trouble was I had to keep looking back in the air to see if I was being followed by the speed enforcement helicopter. Must be high council tax in Derbyshire.
Cant believe this is the way its heading.

Yes that road has got to have one of the silliest "safety camera" in the country. Clear straight country road with a camera in the middle of nowhere. I believe its near Leek. It used to be a favourite and common drives for me, now I've changed routes the cameras and limits are beyond belief.

So what's the best Derbyshire driving road(s) to get from the North West (M6) to Chatsworth House for this Sundays bash ? There seems to be 3 routes. The A537 seems the favourite but it involves getting through Macclesfield. Alternatively the A534/A54 Congleton-Buxton or even Stockport A6 /A623.....
It'd be nice to avoid too many silly limits

Hard to advise as I come from the opposite direction but for definate cr@p limits/silly cameras are A52 through Leek joining A523 to Macclesfield. This is the road being described above. A6 between Chapel-en-frith through Buxton and Matlock, 40mph Limit single lane mostly double lines, not sure about cameras but suspect they would have come by now. I believe the A623 from Chapel-en-frith is okay. Hope that helps. BTW irrelelvant I know but if going south A515 is a good road from Buxton.
I think it seems to be all the main A roads with the reduced limits and double white lines. As far as I could see there were not that many cameras. I went up the A6 from near Nottingham, through Matlock and up past Buxton but coming back took the B roads to Chesterfield which was much more like it. Dont know how often the helicopter gets up in the air but it made me a bit careful on Bank holiday weekend. The main roads are always busy so dont expect a good run for Chatsworth.

Don't take me word for it, but the helecoper thing is a bit of a wind-up, when we spoke to the helecopter crew they said it was just scare tactics, they swing by the road on their way back to base (Ripley) but don't actually measure any speeding
Helicopter speed enforcement used to be done when they were first used, but the management realised that it was not cost effective and that the unit is far better deployed in more serious problems. This is also happening with traffic officers and their equipment, hence the rise in the safety camera and white line explosion. These are cheap cost effective ways of policing environments without the physical need for a uniform presence. They can then be deployed on the out of control street crime initiatives that are being pushed by Govt.

If you want to avoid Macclesfield go to Whaley Bridge on the A6 then to Buxton on the B5004 to Buxton then either to Bakewell on the A6 or up to Chapel on le Frith on the A6 and across on the A623 and then on to Chatsworth.
I'll be going from Macclesfield on the A537 then I'm not sure which way. If anyone wants to meet up on the way give us a shout.

When they put double white lines in to slow people down where it is clearly safe to overtake will lead to more people disregarding road laws. How many people would drive along in a line of traffic doing 10 mph under the limit with double white lines when there is a half mile overtaking space and no oncoming traffic.

Not me..... but there are soo many people out there who don't know how to overtake that to them it doesn't matter - they're quite happy doing 35 behind a caravan/horsebox (who mentioned horses )/ tractor for miles n miles n miles...... too much bloomin time on their hands.

"safety camera" - safety my a**e, what a load of NuLabia PC c**p let's call them what they are and not pretend that their primary motive is safety!
As you go on to say "These are cheap cost effective ways of policing" in other words revenue-raising.
The stupid thing is that Derbyshire have spent millions making the A6 "safe" but have actually had increases in the accident rate ever since!!
You cannot overtake even the slowest "tourist" legally without crossing double lines or cross-hatching. When will these road planners realise that its FRUSTRATION that kills and not speed.

..and another thing, how ironic (and very sad) that the radar plod were out on the A617 between Matlock and Alfreton early one morning a couple of weeks ago on the straightest, widest, safest section of that road when a fatal accident occurred on another nearby road less than 1/2 a mile from them at narrow blind junction!
