Le Speed Camera in France

Hi all, got flashed yesterday by a camera in France. Not massively speeding just wasn't sure what speed I was supposed to be doing with no KPH on the speedo.

Anyone been caught by a French camera and do they chase you for the fine?

They are going to start writing to people though and chasing the fines (not too hard though I would have thought.

Personally I would put 90Euros on one side and if you have heard nothing after 6 months and another visit to France in your car just use it as fun money.

Surely all speedos on cars built in the last 20 years have kph readings?

If your's doesn't for some reason, it's easy to look it up before you go!:

30kph = 20mph
45kph = 30 mph
60kph = 40mph
80kph = 50mph
90kph = 55mph
100kph = 60 mph
110kph = 68mph
130kph = 85mph

all above approximate, but near enough not to get you nicked.

I thought it was a legal requirement for all cars, certainly in the UK to display both MPH and KPH speeds?
My Octy for example only has MPH on the main speedo, however there is a digial KPH reading in the centre of the console.
I thought it was an MOT failure not to have both?

I'm sure you can set the Tuscab one to KPH, but no idea how and couldn't really be bothered to do it, just use rough maths!

I'll know for next time if I get given a ticket.

Apparently not - I have a Delica with KPH only, and I have been repeated told that having MPH is not a requirement of the MOT

130kph = 81mph (1 kph = 0.621371192 mph)

Though I doubt your suggested speeds would get anyone into trouble with the French rozzers.

Most of my old cars display only MPH on their speedometers. I have one (French, LHD) car that displays only KPH. You can easily fix tape pointers to the speedometer glass showing particular speeds in MPH or KPH as the case may be.

Yep, the old man's G55 only has KPH, although it has an optional alternative speed (in mph) on the digital display it's not always set when it goes in for the MOT.

Bit O/T but I was on a bus the other day (I know sorry!) and was surprised to see that the main speed readings (the big digits) were for KPH with smaller MPH digits. Seemed a bit strange for a bus spending its life trundling around Nottingham.

Back on-topic, my mate has a T350 and I believe it's not that hard to swap the dash display to KPH, which would solve all your problems for next time. Might even impress les flicks

Was flashed in France twice last year, although was sure I wasn't speeding both times, but could have missed a sign.

Nothing came through.

If you flick through the screens on a Tuscan, one (either trip or mileage screen) displays kph in the bottom corner. This is mk1 by the way. No idea about my 2.

I've certainly never had anything through from the multiple times I've been flashed (and waved).

In about 1994, a detective from Interpol called to see me and asked who had been driving my car on a French autoroute some weeks earlier. I told him that I had. I heard nothing further. He and I each thought that this might not have been the best use of public resources, French or British.

Yeah, watch out for the real live Gendarmes - but there's no hassle with leaving the French a few extra holiday snaps to show your appreciation of their fine country and excellent road network
