I was in my everyday car (fortunately) and was leaving a motorway behind a new all white Omega with three people therein as we joined another motorway he shot off (we'd only been doing about 70ish). This other motorway was clear but he went straight into the outside lane, I just carried on accelerating and caught up with him about 120ish, also in the outside lane (still no traffic), he didn't pull over and I was about to use my headlamps to signal my presence when his rear lights started flashing blue. Feck feck, feck, I lifted off, indicated left, pulled in and then braked. They carried on regardless, is this a lucky escape or should I keep dreading the post?

Lucky escape I reckon, at that speed if they wanted to nick you they would have pulled you I would have thought.

all new white Omegas travelling at speed should be given a healthy respect in my opinion - why were you racing him anyway?

I reckon you'll be OK, but keep your eyes peeled for them - you can even tell them at night because of their funny coloured headlamps (but its getting harder as more and manufacturers fit them)

Why were they in the outside lane if the motorway was clear Is this standard police procedure if they need to get somewhere in a hurry? Any of our police friends care to enlighten us?

I know I broke the first rule of driving above the speed limit - don't overtake new cars of the police type (Omega being a perfect example!) with alloy wheels, especially not white ones. However, when he shot across to the outside lane and as there was three people in it, I thought someone had been silly enough to get a white company car.

I certainly wasn't racing him, I just carried on accelerating on a bit of motoway I have used daily for 3 years and never seen a police car. I do that speed every morning as there's no-one about. I presume that doesn't count as racing?

120 in a Neon, you must be mad. All Omegas are Police cars, except if they have tow bars and have their homes behind them, that is the rule I live by. I reckon you'll be OK. It would have been safer if you were in the Trev cos on accelerating you would have ended up sideways and would have not caught them up intil the Caen McDonalds

Mike had an Omega Estate, wishes he didn't swap it for his Alfa...oh no that's because he's married with a child

As for the Le Mans burn, you'll beat me there again this year too if it's raining. Roll on June though!

Probably some political scum/slimeball/pratt/BLiarclone with his blue heavies who couldn't be bothered, but mind you they might have called the blues with popguns and then you'dve been in deep sh1t........

I now do a steady 70-80 all the way. Can't risk him remembering me and telling his Speed Gun mates. I do need my car for work!

Sounds like you were trying to race a driving school car, though they usually don't have blue lights fitted,if that was the case they were probbly just letting you know they were police, other possibility was that it was one of the unliveried vehicles going to a job, but if it were it would usually have the blues on. Before my post gets ripped into re speeds/training etc for years our driving school cars have been unliveried without blues, and yes speed limits are exceeded, it is a specific exemption if the car is being used for training purposes. I will leave it there as it would take too long to go into the reasons behind it all.

Should F'in' well think so too, I don't like the idea of a policeman (or anyone) being let loose in a car where they might be called on to do 150 or whatever on the public roads without having been trained at that speed.

totally agree! I personally haven't any problems with police exceeding limits we all think are too low...but ONLY if they're trained like this!

John, thanks for the info, but when does speeding become racing? I was "just" speeding, if he wasn't there I would have done it and if he'd have moved out of the way I'd have done it. (I've learnt my lesson now...)

I would have thought the problem would be when you said you wanted to PASS him at that speed, most people would 'assume' you are trying to show them something - I believe you if you say you weren't racing, but the police may have had a different view.

Its amazing how often you see 2 or 3 repmobiles eg vectra/BMW 3 series/Primera going along at 100, looking for the overtake/undertake on each other as if to say, "look my car can do 100 easily" - well F'ing great, so can just about anything! What they are really trying to tell the other road users, at which they succeed, is that they are total and utter tossers.

The Royal Ordnance Corp (EOD)now run a hand full of white Omegas with blue lights tucked away in grills etc, they are unlivered because of the Terrorist threat (what better car to blow up than the Bomb Doctors) and look pretty normal, the blues are only meant to go on when going to a job but "squaddies" being the way they are you might have got a "lets shit this tosser up", it would also account for the poor standard of driving, and the possibility that three of them were going down the pub for lunch.

I think you are safe. I did a similar thing on the M25 about 14 years ago (showing my age.) I was driving one of the original RS turbo Escorts and came up behind a red Rover SD1 3500. It was doing about 90 and it accelerated up to 100 or so. I stayed with it at a safe distance. It accelerated more and so on. Then one of the back seat passengers (4 bods in car) ducked down and reappeared with police hat on and signalled me to pull over. Deep sinking feeling ensued. I got a dressing down on the hard shoulder, a don't do it again and off they went.
I couldn't figure out why I didn't get booked until later when I was at a party talking to a barrister type who told me that as they were in front and making the running, so to speak, their actions would be construed as incitement. .... no case to answer then!

Hope this is reassuring.

Regards

John
