I know this is a bit of an old chestnut by now, but something I sawa yesterday got me pndering...

I use the M6 around Brum a fair bit, and down by J11 where they're building the the new toll road (grrrrrrrr) there has been a sped restriction for the last couple of months. Traffic flows thru no problem, no accidents (as far as I'm aware), most reduce to at or near 60 (limit is 50), everything is fine.

Now they've just marked out the dragons teeth for "safety/revenue" cameras and lo and behold, what happens - yep - an accident. Right by the markings. Whoo'd've thought it. A nasty looking one from what I saw as well, car har run into the back of a truck, flipped and rolled off the motorway completely. Couple of ambulances in attendance etc... You can imagein what happened, Jo Bloggs quite happily motoring along, sees the markings, checks speed, oops a bit over, doesn't want the 3 points/£60, so stamps on the brakes, Lorry behind does the same, car behind loses it completely. SO now we have a car written off, a couple of people in hospital, a HUGE insurance claim etc etc etc.... all in the name of safety. Go figure. Makes me fg MAD

If J11 is the M42/A446 junction, then there's been a speed restriction just east of there for good reason: a few vicious horizonal creases across the entire carriageway. I absolutely have to adhere to the speed restriction there because the 'tiv virtually takes off if I don't...

But I could be talking about an entirely different junction: I don't work by junction numbers, but by the road numbers that intersect at that point. For this reason, radio traffic announcements are frequently useless. Junction 7 on the M25? Not a clue. A10 junction? Ah! I'm with ya...

Nah - those bumps are much further down, to the south - the bits I'm on about are to the north, near the M54 junction.

As for 4 wheels off the ground, hmmmmmmmm, I know a great humpback bridge in Essex where you can do that - its straight road on both sides, nice n wide - take it at anything over 70(ish) and you can FLY!!!! yippee!

The ridges are between Corley Services and J4a, between Coventry and Birmingham, where the M6 is sinking into some old mines.

One of them in particular is sinking so badly it need resurfacing every couple months. From the tyre marks on the road it looks like it gets bad enough to have caused a few accidents. It gets bad enough in my A8; I can't imagine how it would affect a ten year old knacker with ropey shocks being driven on the limit at 80mph - or maybe I can with the help of those skid marks!

There'e one in Longford, Coventry - problem is it has traffic lights about 50m away on one side, and shops the other. Not much scope for big air in a car, but a hoot for "accidental" wheelies on your bike. Not that I'd condone such irresponsible behaviour of course. Oh no.

I have to say I've done this a few times myself recently, but I am on 8 points. I'd rather get rear ended than lose my licence.

Anyone know the insurance stance on this. I'd have thought that if you were rear-ended whatever the reason, the guy behind cops the blame. Would this be the case? Anyone been in this situation?

I believe you're right, unless you've just pulled out in front of someone doing 80 and accelerated slowly up to 30, as happened to a friend not long ago

You could easily have just seen a child/horse/UFO about to step out into the road, in which case you'd have no option but to stop.

So it shouldn't be any less your fault if you had some other resaon to stop/slow.

Sounds logical anyway.
