FFS... totally disproportionate.

A few meters of gash rope or hose pipe and it'd have been been squared away. If it even needed that... Looked pretty calm before the impact.

But I accept that most city folks only ever see a cow in McDonalds.

Chris packham wants the police prosecuted and the RSPCA have been critical of the police in a statement.

It does seem a bit heavy handed, but hindsight and all that.

A horrible situation, but please do not let Packham get involved otherwise cows will become protected animals.

Surely they could have got a vet with a tranquilliser gun to take of it.

You'd need to know how much the calf weighs in order to know how much tranquilliser to use.
Too little and it won't work. Too much and you risk killing it.
You'd also need to know whether it has an health conditions.
And they do all this out in Africa to sedate a wild animal? No they make an educated guess and get the job done!!

I've dealt with cows on the loose. On 2 occasions.

The difference being, there was no foot traffic. It was on a semi rural road. One way in, one way out.

Our radio Controllers scoured previous calls to the area hoping to find a number for the/a local farmer.
It was resolved by some local farmers herding the cows into a field.

The other time, similar road, was a single calf, we just shut the road, and eventually the cow jumped back through the fence into its field.

Again, both of these were on semi-rural roads.

"An educated guess" by professionals that sedate wild animals as their day job.
Not 'Rob the vet' from London who has never had to tranquillise a roving cow.

I don't think that, conditional on a tranquilliser gun being found (where? maybe london zoo?) this should be easy enough to get around - just err on the side of too much. There's worse ways of going than a carfentanyl overdose.

Not sure it would work. They're designed for humans.

I've seen it NOT work on a dog.

No I mean zoos that have vets capable of using their expertise and judgement.

Let me also say that the RSPCA also have the expertise and equipment to do the same with guns/dart sticks.

Really? On call are they, like armed police…. just handily circulating London streets. Was the cow just going to stay where it was for a few hours?

Vet Squads. Distributed across the nation. On call late Friday nights, just in case a cow goes on a rampage in suburbia somewhere and needs tranquilising.

I doubt very much that The RSPCA do.

Perhaps The RSPCA should be the emergency service people call when animals are involved.

Edit: I stand corrected - https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1291139/G...

The "experts" didn't save the bird.....

Yes if the 'right' phone call is made! Let's say it was an XL Bully on the rampage................

My vets are on call 24/7 by the way and have all the kit at their disposal.

I’m disappointed that noone from the misfits thread called in one of the ‘one eye on the phone’ peeps. It was a golden opportunity for a nearby walt to spring into action with their 4x4 and hiviz

High steaks policing!

As soon as the cow causes a fatal RTC the same Excel spreadsheet types will Tweet, “wah wah why didn’t the police stop it?”

No one will care tomorrow and that’ll be the end of it.
It’s election silly season, I’m hoping we see sunak and starmer argue over which one of them will adopt the calf. No doubt it has a name and is a beloved family pet by the next tv debate and sunak and starmer both had grandads who were cow farmers.

Of course now they do and quite right too. In the past a vet on call would be called to assist etc.

It's West London mate, not rural Shropshire. There are people milling around, out and about, all the time.
It’s not, you know. It’s Surrey. And a quick Google has come up with at least 8 beef or mixed farms for Surrey. One, I assume, very close to where the calf came from, unless it teleported in…

I appreciate it’s not exactly the same thing but I grew up very close to Epsom Downs, also Surrey, and a loose horse running down the road, whilst not a daily occurrence, was often enough that you wouldn’t bat an eyelid.

I refuse to believe they couldn’t find a large animal farmer or vet that would have handled this better…
