You'd need to know how much the calf weighs in order to know how much tranquilliser to use.
Too little and it won't work. Too much and you risk killing it.
You'd also need to know whether it has an health conditions.

The guardian said ‘ A Surrey police spokesperson said they tried to safely capture the cow over a number of hours and explored a number of options before hitting it with a car. The force said the matter had been referred to its professional standards department.’

What I am desperate to know is what the options they ruled were that they thought were WORSE than ttting it with a Volvo.
They ruled out hitting with a Volvo too.

Umm. I'm not sure how to put this.

They drove at it with a vehicle.

"over a number of hours..."

Plenty of time to get a vet there then with a dart and sedate it.

Also maybe time to get a farmer out from the farm it was subsequently taken to. Or had escaped from.

Absolutely appalling and like many things in this Country its hard to believe how standards have declined in the Police . It seems the Public have more respect for the Uniform than those that wear it do .

Well, by their own admission the cow does seem to have outsmarted them initially.

What course of action would you have taken?.

They were damned if they do or damned if they don't in this instance.

Are you sure? That's very surprising. I'd far rather be with 20 random dogs than 20 random cattle.
Really? Most of us walk through fields containing 20 random cattle fairly regularly with no great drama. Even the commons right in the middle of Cambridge would fit that description (and I’m sure many other places are similar).
Yes. Don't get me wrong, I'm not petrified of walking through Midsummer Common (I mean I don't in practice but that's cause while I'm familiar with and have friends there I live hundreds of miles from Cambridge... but where I do live I walk through fields with cattle in all the time. And in the "even less threatening" axis my house is 20 yards away from a field full of sheep, who I'd take over the dogs).

But I would be marginally safer walking through it with 20 random dogs than a random heard of 20 cows fosho.

Obviously you could fill it full of 20 rabid XL bullies or something but that's distorting the sample somewhat.

It's not a person.

It's a cow.

It's going to be kept in a field for years. It'll be bred for more cows. Depending on what it's been bred for, it's going to get slaughtered.

According to another forum -

"The police were aware days before that there was a cow on the loose, this wasn't unexpected".

Yeah, sure, no need to ask questions if it could be handled better, it's just an animal...

I didn't say it couldn't have been handled better.

What we don't know is -
What was considered and tried before taking this action?
Was the farmer contacted?
Was a farmer contacted?
Was a vet contacted?
Was the use of firearms considered?

But it's not dead, so there's no need for a vigil

Hopefully next time something like this happens the police will post on PH asking for assistance. Based on the posts on here there'll be plenty of people turn up who will sort the situation out in no time at all. rolleyes

This story gets better -

Apparently this cow was reported as loose a few days ago, but because it was on Common Land, no one did anything.

Someone waited "several hours" before contacting someone to deal with it....via Facebook.

No vehicles were damaged and no one was at risk......apparently
