just watching The Mummy (1999) - what a fantastic film, even after 25 years. Yes some of the SFX are showing their age but the casting is top-notch, the story fun and it moves along at a good clip - very similar I guess to Indiana Jones 1 & 3 (even though I like IJ2 I'll admit it's not as good as the other 2).

3.5 canopic jars out of the 4 needed

To be fair there is a twist, I didn't see it coming, and it's not that the bad guy is the caretaker from Hogwarts.

Did you know that the caretaker from Hogwarts is also Doctor Who? Or, rather, played William Hartnell in the BBC drama "An Adventure in Space and Time" (something that I very much recommend, and I'm not even a Dr Who fan)

He was also Walder Frey in Game of Thrones

I remember him in GoT (and Hot Fuzz), didn't realise he was in Doctor Who though. A good choice to play Hartnell as he does look a lot like his character.

Is that some sort of “adult” version of Dr Who?

Darkman - Film 4

Haven't watched this since it came out in 1990, but found it a real struggle as it just seemed so dated. Lasted about 3/4 through it and had to turn it off.

I find watching certain films from the 1980s feel so hideously dated in a way I just don't get with say '60s or '70s films. Tried watching To Live & Die in L.A. recently and it had the same dated vibe. Maybe it's the film they used or something. Or the haircuts. confused

Sorry, it was a typo. I meant "An Adventure in Space and Time"

It's very good

I enjoyed Sisu (NowTV) last night.

I really, really didn't enjoy Meg2, but that's understandable because it was complete and utter st. To be fair, the last 45 minutes might have been brillianf, but I'd turned it off by then.
Loved Sisu, hated Meg 2 - good summary!

Probably just the modern iteration.

Monday night was movie night so we raided Netflix

The Great Wall

For some reason Matt Damon and Pedro Pascal are wandering around ancient China and get coerced into fighting alien monsters. Co-star Jing Tian was one of the few saving graces.

6/10

Atlas

Jennifer Lopez accidentally ends up alone on a hostile AI-run planet with only her AI to talk to. Looked amazing, but a plodding story.

6/10

We must try harder.

Arrival, had never heard of this before but it popped up on Netflix. A different take on the aliens landing movie. Have to say I enjoyed it 7 arms out of 10 tentacles.

It's directed by Denis Villeneuve who also directed Blade Runner 2049 and the two recent Dune films.

For a full filmography see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denis_Villeneuve

He's probably one of my favourite directors now.

Have you seen Incendies? I hear very good things about it but it's not streaming anywhere.

Yes a long time ago, it was quite remarkable if I recall with a very shocking reveal.

Couple of Oldies

Black Rain - Michael Douglas, Andy Garcia 1989

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G9V2gN_a3P8

Interesting, but not great. Garcia is having fun though. 5/10

AND

Three days of the Condor - Robert Redford, Faye Dunaway 1975

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sov8R9PNVwg

Gave up about half way in. The whole subplot with Faye Dunaway grated. 3/10

A similar conceit is Rising Sun (1993) starring Sean Connery and Wesley Snipes. Similar idea of 'Westerners have no clue in Japan', only Sean Connery's character is an expert in Japanese culture.

He does have extensive experience with Little Nellie through the region.

Trigger Warning - Netflix
Jessica Alba is back as some sort of overpowered government military personnel.

After her dad dies in mysterious circumstances in a mine accident she takes over his bar in the middle of the dessert that's attached to said mine.

She soon gets hassled by the local gang and her skills are called into action after uncovering a conspiracy.

Tbh you could have thrown any B-list actor in here looking for work and the outcome would have been the same as it's so run of the mill.

Nice to see Jessica back but you've seen this film a million times before.

4/10 disappointing.
Oh man - it is bad isn't it? It's not that I disbelieved you but... Jessica Alba... yeah, I should have believed you. I'm halfway through and it's absolutely terrible. Every cliché from the story progression, the acting (waiting to be punched), to the lines they speak. I wonder if actors cringe when they deliver such crap.

I think 4/10 is too generous - there wasn't even anything nice in Jessica Alba to see. The part she played was written for a man, surely?

Spectral (Netflix)
This is actually alright, better than you might think.

The A-Team stuff at the end is a bit daft and of course it's too long™ but I enjoyed it overall. There's enough new ideas and cool robot stuff to lift it out of the massive pile of cliched and forgettable sci-fi shooty films.

Just the fact that I can remember having watched it at the weekend makes it stand out from a lot of stuff on Netflix. hehe

Ghostbusters
The original one. It's still good smile
