With the early 390SE, the 3.9 engine was considered an option (as was the body work) so a 350 was taken and modified up so the official docs often had a discrepancy over the engine size. In reality, the car was built from day one as a 390 but the documentation implied or could be interpreted that TVR took a 350i and modified it. This was why the docs often referred to a 350.
BTW similar things happened with the S series by the way where 2.9 engined cars were officially described as 280S and so on. Certainly type approval comes into the equation but I suspect ease of getting product out of the door was the real motivator. They were tough times in the Eighties...

I was in a bookshop yesterday (browsing the motoring section as one does) and I saw a photo of a 420 SEAC that dosn't look like a SEAC!
- Ottakers (I prob. spelt wrong) bookshop, 'Millers Collecters car guide 2005 edition, I think.
Had small section on TVRs. Photo was b & w, but I would assume yellow colour, decal on the wing and lattice alloys.
Might be your car? One thing though, not seen front side lights/indicators like these, they stick out from the front bumber, 1960's style.

Sorry, personally I disagree - and I am not referring to firefox here just any TVR in general - whether any car is to my taste or not is immaterial and all I would do is voice a pesonal opinion about it, good or bad, and if bad that isn't getting arsey. There's modified and modified - sticking a bigger engine or uprating brakes is one thing, radically altering a body shape, especially to make it look like something it isn't, is something else.
It's actually quite important to have the right credentials for a car as otherwise 3000 quid on a 350i can make it a 450SEAC and push it's value up considerably.

Personally i don't care what they are called - its obvious that there is no standard for wedges you would be hard pressed to find two that are identical - I don't care what you call em or how much u paid for it - they are all wedges to me and all of em feckin cool

I totally agree with the gist of the sentiment but again I think it is quite important what they are called. For example - one of the last 100 limited run Griffs, in 20 years time, is going to be worth more than an equivalent Griff that's not one of the 100. I dare say that for very little money you can alter any Griff to look like one of the last 100 but without the right credentials it won't be. You can even put a 5 litre in a 4 litre Griff but should you then rebadge it is a Griff 500 - yes if you want - that's up to the owner but it should never be sold on as a Griff 500. Even if the brakes were uprated to 500 spec and whatever else was different was done it would always be a 4 litre Griff upgraded to 500 spec, not a 500.
Same with the wedges, do what you like to it, call it whatever you like, that's your perogative but even if you changed absolutely everything on a 350 to 400 spec, even building it from scratch, it will never be a 400 cause it never left the factory as one.
Therefore it is relatively important (I know it's not world shattering stuff) that the history of firefox is unearthed as then it can be rightly called what it actually is.

However, due to various illnesses in the family over the last few months, the passing of my mother, and ultimately my own hospitalisation with a heart attack, I have been unable to pursue any further investigations as to the history of the car.
The Rev-erend will be interested to know that a recent stone chip has revealed some red paint underneath.
I have always accepted, along with many others and in tune with suggestions from some, that the car is a 420 SEAC that has, for reasons unknown, different bodywork.
Interesting information about the book. The description of the photo suggests (as has been put forward) that this is a depiction of the car as it appeared in the auction catalogue before the front bumper was fitted.

I'm guessing it's about a Blue 420SE (or wot i thought was a 420SE 😬)?
Last I heard of that car, it was living in Spain & for sale early in the pandemic 🤔
Think the owner got fed up with no takers (but there was no travel allowed 🙄)
Owner disappeared after threatening to break it up & use the chassis under something else 😞
