not heard that name in many years: Pentti Airikkala.
Clearly needs a bit of TLC and a polish. Seems step but it is rare.
150bhp with for example, the Yaris GR putting out 257bhp with a 1.6, that figure seems very quaint.
Yeah, 150 bhp is not much these days, but in the late seventies when most cars were in the 40 to 80 bhp range I can see why it was considered a lot, plus it was light and you would have the carbs drawing in air, exhaust barking etc so though 150 bhp may sound a bit pedestrian I bet its not by any means.

My uncle had a 2.3 Magnum which was the 8 valve version of the 2.3 Slant engine, that always seemed pretty fast, had a few mods for 130 ish bhp, my cousin had it as his first car and it had enough power to have us end up in a field during a "Watch this" moment round the back of Manchester Airport.

A Polo GTI would be quicker, but would it feel it ? I doubt it.

The original Porsche 911 Turbo, at the same time when this was new, only had 260bhp, and 3.0 Carrera less than 200. They would still feel quick for the level of grip, brakes and lack of modern safety equipment of the time.

The only thing wrong with that is the colour. In silver with DTV logos it could happily sit in my dream garage alongside a Bjorn Waldergard 1979 Monte spec Escort and a 1080 Sunbeam Lotus. If pushed I could find space for a Pond spec TR8. Heaven

Very torn on this car, hlf of me absolutely loves it, other half thinks bodywork looks a little wrong / ill proportioned.

Either way, I bet it is a hoot to drive, and you will definitely never see another on the road..... or anywhere.

Pentii Arikkala was a hero of mine back in the day, i have great memories of passenger laps round Donnington with Pentii and also the late great Roger Clark when I was a young sales rep for Goodyear in the early 80's.Both had wholly exuberant driving styles and the more we egged them on the more on the limit they got.The post lunchtime sessions were the best as beer and wine was served with the food.Roger Clark was a bit pished and the queue for his rides was bigger than anyone elses.
Great little cars those Vauxhalls, shame only Toyota gave us a rally rep in recent years.

The author is comparing an unadulterated Chevette HSR, price wise (£60k)with mk1 and mk2 escorts, when he says it has finally exceeded the escort price ceiling. What he should have been comparing it (price wise) to would be an unadulterated escort rs1600 (mk1) or rs 1800 (mk2), both of which would make £60k like spare change.

I think these will be at their peak really, very rare but anyone born after 1980 probably wont have any memories of them, unless they are into historic rallying and stuff.

Anyone who had or aspired to one in period will be getting on a bit, its like a lot of the pre/early post war stuff has softened value wise as those who have any connection with them are either no longer with us or very elderly and this will start happening with cars like this, there isnt a constant trajectory upwards.
We shall see but I think this is pretty much on the money.

Some cars become eternal or blue chip classics.

Others fall away as the audience for them winds up back in nappies.

However the way asset prices have behaved has become ever more warped so it's hard to call.

'Investors' might keep things like this chugging even knowing little about them. They'll be shown some old prices and be told of its rarity.

Will we all look back one day and think, I saw one for £60k, wish I bought it.

Like when I could have bought a 22B.
Mid 80s and you could pick up one for £3.5k

Could get an ordinary HS for a bit less

Indeed.

Would also like to know why author thinks that 'most seem to think, power of the HSR was same as HS at 135hp' as I don't know anyome that knows about the cars to think that.
The HSR's came from factory with the twin sidedraft carbs fitted (2x48DHLA's IIRC) whereas the HS was strangled with the pair of Stromberg's hence it only being 135hp (on a good day) and the HSR finally allowed the 16v DOHC engine to breath with a proper induction setup.

The big problem with the HSR was it still had the egg-cup size 8-gal fuel tank, along with the direct top Getrag 5-speed, which meant that you were doing well to get 120-130 miles out of a tank of fuel before visiting a petrol station again......

I can still vividly remember seeing two brand new, unregistered HSR's being unloaded from a car transporter outside Mamos Garage in Greenford, West London on my way home from school one day as I went past, so stopped and looked on as they were unloaded They were a well known big dealer of DS Firenza and HS Chevette back in the day.

What a weapon this must have been in its day, I saw a Lotus Sunbeam or ti being driven hard yesterday and made me want one.

Makes me weep. Sunbeam Lotus, Avenger Tiger, Alfasud 105 Green Cloverleaf, Peugeot 205GTi….
Will people look back on the cars of the early 2020’s in the same way?
