I'd be keen to hear how it all went?

My dad is going through the same just now, waiting on a hip replacement but has been told around 18+ month wait on the NHS. It's now got to the point where he can hardly walk without tremendous pain, so as you can imagine he is exploring all options.

It went absolutely brilliant, picked up from the airport to a lovely hotel, hospital the next day for all the tests operation 2 days later, physio every day and regular blood tests by a nurse.

Stayed 3 weeks in a ittle town called Nowy Targ, booked assistance on the way back with Ryanair which was fantastic.

I was off crutches a month later and pain free, unfortunately I fell onto a concrete step and fractured my hip and thigh, called a periprosthetic fracture, had to have a 6 hour operation and 3 weeks in hospital, that was in March, I'm still recovering.

Surgeon said if I'd had the same fall on my left hip which I had replaced 6 years ago it would have been a similar result.

I used these https://www.operationsabroadworldwide.co.uk/

I chose Poland as I live close to Leeds/Bradford airport, was quoted £15500 to get a hip replacement in the UK, cost of having the opp done in Poland including flights, special insurance and food was less than half of that, do your research beforehand, my surgeon was one of the top orthopedic surgeons in Poland, he worked in a town near the ski runs so had lots of practice.

The Doc has told you all you need to know and backed it up with solid evidence.
Ignore his/her advice at your peril.

But by all means just go with some anecdotal evidence from a stranger on the net.

My dad had his hip replaced with the same company in the same place and we wish he'd done it years ago instead of waiting for the NHS. The care both before and after was brilliant and he is so much more mobile now. Well worth the money if you have it plus the way we saw it, we were freeing up NHS space for people who can't afford to go private.

His other hip is deteriorating so it will be next and we'll use the same company again.

See the comment above, you've obviously never had severe osteoarthritis and been told you have to wait 18 month for a replacement, some people won't be able to work during that time.

Do you think the hospitals, doctors and surgeons are better over here than Poland? It's not a 3rd world country.

Yes they have good ones, by how do you know who they are? Can you spot a bad one?
Their website doesn't count.
In the UK, it's all controlled and data analysed.

And the NHS broken

You do research, my surgeon was in the to 10 of Polish osteopathic surgeons, he's based in a town called Zacopane which is next to the ski runs, so gets lots of practice.

My surgeon, good enough for you

A broken NHS is another reason for looking outside the UK.

Absolutely do your own research. For us, the company came highly recommended by someone we know who had used them for the same operation and even then we used the internet and our own contacts in Poland to make sure we were making the right decision. Although i have to admit being told that Dad would not have got his hip replacement on the NHS until mid-2024 was also a huge incentive.

I remember taking my parents to the airport (op was done in May 2023) and Dad was struggling so badly that I insisted we got a wheelchair for him. Another year of that would have been utterly miserable for him and as he's in his late 70s, would have been a precious year of his life spent in pain and not being able to do much. Instead, he's quite sprightly again, out walking most days and back to enjoying travelling.

It's amazing when you get a new hip, I had my left one done 6 years ago in a private hospital paid for by the NHS only waited 6 weeks, I was right as rain 6 weeks later, that was another reason for choosing having it done abroad as I knew what was involved.

Polish hospital was equivalent to the UK one but after care and physio was better in Poland, they also concentrate on avoiding thrombosis as you're flying back, drugs and exercise helps with this.

Why does living next to ski run mean you get lots of practice for hip replacements?

He's an orthopedic surgeon, like all surgeons who replace hips, so lots of practice being an orthopedic surgeon smile

It's very rare to beak one's hip skiing. I think I've seen it once in 20 yrs (of being an orthopaedic surgeon)
And great orthopaedic surgeons don't live next to ski areas for the practice, maybe they just like the scenery.
Ski injuries are knees and wrists.

This fella might be a great surgeon. My point is, with a foreign surgeon outside of mature health economies, You Just Don't Know.
Their website isn't evidence, I can write an amazing website for me, and I'm a terrible hip replacement surgeon. (I only do hip fracture surgery, 2000+ of these, not hip replacement)
Registry data and national level evaluation of outcomes for dislocation, infection, reoperation and implant surviorship is the reliable data.
Does he use an ODEP 10+ implant (and if not why not)
How the heck is the general public going to evaluate this?
In the UK, you can rely on external practice evaluation and look at data using this, an example UK surgeon page https://surgeonprofile.njrcentre.org.uk/SurgeonPro...

Picking that page as I know that chap and he's top 10 in the UK.

It is VERY difficult for a patient to pick a surgeon and the less their country regulates and inspects their work, the harder it is to actually see how good some one is.
Personal websites and non-objective data mean nothing.
Go abroad to minor country=roll the dice
Getting a 6 is possible

I'll say no more on this.
