My dad would NEVER stop at a Little Chef because they were too expensive and you could never be sure that your egg yolk would be runny.

I quite liked them, but they were always a bit spendy for what it was.

I was on the road as a sales rep in the eighties, used to do about 60k a year, lived off Little Chef and Happy Eater.

Tonbridge has a new Wimpy opening. It's strange as Wimpy and a few of the newer brands (Taco Bell etc) seem to be the only franchises available.

I remember the Olympic Breakfast at Little Chef. What started off as 2 sausages became one sausage and then half a sausage when they were in the financial doldrums. You also had to time dining at Little Chef. If it was packed, you'd be waiting 45 minutes for food, so either go early or late, as they had a peculiar system of cooking orders in order when they could double up - so if one table ordered 2 Olympic breakfasts, and the next one also ordered 2 Olympics, they wouldn't cook 4 at the same time. On occasions you'd encounter one Chef who was on the ball, but such foresight was very rare.

The thing to remember was that back in the 80's there were far fewer McDonalds drive throughs and no Costas, Starbucks etc. If you were out late on the primary routes, your choice of dining was the appalling services, or Little Chef/Happy Eater. Having a Happy Eater dinner at 8pm on the A1 was a major step up over the services.

Not forgetting the Little Chef teapots that would always dribble hugely and would never pour cleanly, ever, so one would always keep teapot, cup & saucer on the tray, at all times.

Used to be called a bender, now a bendy, I believe. A bit like a saveloy or hot dog iirc.

Fish and chip restaurant near me has teapots like above.

Wimpy - sophisticated dining in an era when many cafes had just one teaspoon on a chain.
