Why are some used car dealers so rude?
Discussion
I have to put up with this crap regularly. When I was 19 I was looking to replace my first car, base spec polo and was in the market for either a BMW 3 or 4 series or a VW Golf GTI/R. I must have been turned away from many dealers for looking like a tyre kicker. The absolute worst experience was at the BMW dealer when they flat out rudely told me that I probably couldn’t afford it.

ks. I made a point never to give them the time of day again and always serviced my F30 at Sytner instead who were much more friendly.
When dealing with Mercedes at the age of 20, I was in the market for a new EQC. I was refused a test drive EVERYWHERE! Except Cargiant.

Car dealer here yes I'm afraid the trade is full of wideboys/part time drug dealers etc. A lot will depend on what your looking for and where. A cheap car on a cheap lot it could be any old del boy selling stuff with no prep and not a care. Or it could be someone like Chops garage that does an absolutely brilliant job and is extremely diligent and honest. Unfortunately the public can often treat us all the same.
The job can be like going to war every day for general dealers. I'm in a niche where I get better quality customers than most people will have to deal with. I wouldn't last a week in mainstream dealership dealing with people that are just looking to go to war at the first opportunity it must be very waring on the old mental health. For all those having a possibly justified pop at car dealers would you last even a day in that job? I doubt it! It's like being a copper nobody really wants to do the job!

Having recently tried to sell a couple of cars myself, I certainly wouldn't want to do it as a job! He's probably just very frustrated
The timewasting idiots is unreal now! They want photos of everything and a million questions answered, which you do, never to be heard from again!
No shows on viewings and general messing about.
The best are the ones who start their messages " I'm not a timewaster " you can guarantee they are! Idiots.....
I'm sure it wasn't like this when I last sold a car (pre-Covid)
Oh and there's some great stories of supercar selling on this thread:-

That’s exactly what happens when things cost so much more and your money doesn’t stretch as far. The timewasting idiots is unreal now! They want photos of everything and a million questions answered, which you do, never to be heard from again!

I just checked his web site again, 2 weeks on, and it hasn't sold, and he's reduced the price by £100.
So he was indeed talking rubbish. If he phones me back I'll laugh at him, no way am I buying any car from him!
I've just checked again today (28/06) and another £100 has ben taken off! Expecting him to call me any moment ...So he was indeed talking rubbish. If he phones me back I'll laugh at him, no way am I buying any car from him!

The thread after the initial post you start to feel more inclined to agree that shooing the O/P off was the right move by the dealer.
Definately this! Some of the best deals are the ones you don't do and all that, he sounds like a potential nightmareI have already bought elsewhere from a very pleasant dealer who did give me the requested "discount for no part exchange".
When I asked the first one for a discount he rudely told me he had 4 other people waiting to buy it. Now he hasn't sold it and he's reduced the price by the amount I asked for, but I still don't want it because he was so rude.
Contrary to this, I've just gone thought the painful process of buying another car. Painful because of the standard of cars being offered for sale, there is some utter s
te out there. All the dealers I interacted with were actually really nice, but the quality of the stock was very poor.
Bought private in the end but only because the car was better than anything I'd seen in the trade.

I remember when I bought my second car a Nova SR no less! This is 25 years ago and I still clearly remember it I went on the day to pick the car up and was there early very keen to get my new whip. The dealer was opening up and while he fumbled in his pickets he put his bunch of keys on the bonnet of my Nova! What a knob! There are some idiots in the trade no doubt.

Once, whilst waiting for a redundancy decision, I applied to the local Merc Dealership for a junior sales position.
I wanted a new challenge.
Is the job of the salesman, one of helping people to actually understand what they want and need, and point them.to the options?
Mostly, I know what I want, but I need a test drive to confirm that I'm right, in my decision.
I once phoned a trader about a van they had for sale, and could I come and view it. To which he said he had lent it out to someone moving house. Ok so I left it, then a couple of weeks later it was still on he's web site, but now £200 cheaper, so I phoned again to be told the same story . All the time not moted or taxed.

But now you seem to be waiting for him to phone you! He won't and why do you car anyway? Very oddI have already bought elsewhere from a very pleasant dealer who did give me the requested "discount for no part exchange".

Whilst that would piss me off unfortunately it boils down to peoples standards.I’m a keen cyclist and wince when I see people stacking bikes worth thousands up against each other, on the odd occasion someone has propped their bike against mine I get inwardly annoyed but have to remind myself they are just working to their own standards.
