Swedish turnip or simply turnip as the Scots and most cornish call it is the only accepted choice.
Pretty sure Scots call 'em "neeps"...
Well having spent 3 years up there ensconced with a native in a past life I think I know! ...they don't go into the brand farm shop and ask for a neep. Although tbf Edinburgh folk and haddingtonshireites are a wee bit more effected than the rest, at least those in my circles. Maybe in Tranent or Prestonpans.

hehe
Calm down mate!! On reflection, I should have written "many" Scots call 'em "neeps", as I was recalling a conversation with a friend of mine (RIP) who had to clarify wtf he was talking about on the subject. I wrote that some Scots say "neeps" in response to, "...as the Scots and most Cornish call it...". Maybe you should have written, "...as most Scots and Cornish call it...", if you were aware of the word, for clarity.

I wrote "pretty sure" in order that someone could clarify, as I am quite happy to be corrected. Thank you for correcting me so pleasantly and for the hehe to roundly finish off such an important point. I am staggered, as I did not know that you had taken such a tremendous amount of time and effort - by speaking to every Scot - in order to establish whether everyone did or did not say "neeps". That is truly a great effort and my apologies for impinging on your chosen subject. Well, your day did finally come, and I stand corrected..., sort of. wink
Perhaps it's me but there's a brightly colored feather talking bird fluttering around somewhere.

Not sure what your getting your kickers in a twist over it was perfectly polite!

The snigger was my final line about the places I mention, but I guess only a local would get that. Apols.
Perhaps I read it wrongly, maybe I didn't. If I did I apologise.

A big shout to Ann’s, especially direct from Helston. yum
Good to know. We've a week in a cottage just outside of Helston next week. Probably walk down into Porthleven and pick up some from Philps like last time but good to have some alternatives. And by alternatives I don't mean instead of...

Edit. Also just noticed there's an Ann's in Porthleven. I feel a 'pasty off' coming on

Always enjoy from Brian Etherington Meat.

Bonus as they are just off the A30 outside Redruth so good option when driving.

Nellys in Lostwithiel.

She offers traditional pasties plus some nice other varieties. One time I was in there she got in an argument with a guy who took exception to the fact she'd started offering a curry pasty - he considered this sacrilege.

OP reporting back.

Assuming that Philps' pasties are as good as they were when I first tried them back in 2002, as of last week :-

Rowe's : As luck would have it, there was a dedicated Rowe's bakery just outside St. Agnes where we were staying. The only "thing" for me was the filling was a little too salty and a little lacking in pepper. Otherwise, the pastry was good, and had the right balance of veg and steak.

Ann's : I'm sure it was because it was fearsome busy (even on a Tuesday afternoon), but the pastry had a soggy bottom, the veg was largely raw, and the steak was chewy.

For us, however, the bar has been set by :-

https://stagnesbakery.co.uk/

The pastry wasn't flaky nor shortcrust, but melt-in-the-mouth good and a great flavour. Packed with a perfectly seasoned filling that lacked nothing, and £4.20 a pop.

Are they shortcrust pastry as their website isn't very clear?

St Agnes Bakery is absolutely magnificent. I can never decide between traditional and steak and Stilton so always end up getting one of each...

I had an Anns pasty (from Baker Toms) yesterday, it was really really good. Very much recommended!

Yeh saw the pics none showing shortcrust - looks like rough puff to me. Not my preference so wont be trying. Many offer a choice.

Awesome, more left for me.

It's great pastry.

Never actually saw/noticed two different types of pastry in one shop before!

Always accompanied by a Rattler, so there's another of my 5 a day, right?
