I've done a couple of trips to Belgium to look at war stuff - the landscape seems massive, it is inconceivable that it was at one point basically churned up mud as far as the eye could see, with tunnels and bunkers and walkways dug in.

You can get guide maps to help read the landscape - I recall being struck by how some dots on the map corresponded to the front line for each side, and it felt like the distance from which you'd stroll over and shake someone's hand if you saw them in the street.

Makes the mind boggle somewhat.
