Hey everyone,

I am a little reluctant in selling it privately not knowing whether they will be timewasters, I wouldn't feel comfortable letting them drive the car to be honest but I think I can achieve another £1.5-2k if I was to sell it privately.

I was offered just under £30k on carwow but was looking closer to £31k

What would you do?

On a car of that value and for the sake of 1k, Id snap Carwows hands off rather that deal with tyre kickers, people who don't turn up, thugs who may turn up, scammers who definitely will turn up and just generally dealing with the general public.

but that's just me.

Absolutely this all day long.

A bird in the hand and all that.

I sold my Golf R via Carwow to avoid the faff.

Once I was contacted by the winning bidder, I negotiated with the dealer to do the deal outside of Carwow and got a couple of hundred extra my way. Worth considering if you're sweating over a grand.

for a quality car like that and >£30K price tag, you are fishing in a small pool of buyers that will have the required funding available without needing finance.
Also, they need yo be willing to part with quite a significant chuck of cash to buy privately to save a few quid than dealer price, and any remaining manufacturers warranty aside, be comfortable they are forfeiting the safety of a dealer purchase and the associated backup and assurances that offers.

as others have said - take the money offered.

Didn't think of that, might give that a try. Thanks

This. I sold my C63 to Evans Halshaws buy your car thing and it’s was extremely easy. Took it in, he looked around, offered me a price, I gave him the keys, he transferred the monies, off I went.
With an M340, same as the C63, unless you like large groups from Bradford and Birmingham rocking up at your house then I’d take the carwow offer.

From what I've read on this site, Id be wary of Motorway, as dealers bid through it and are not as far as I could tell vetted or rated by the platform. One poster on here reported of some dodgy operators turning up at his friends house.

Not sure how Carwow works, but I'd do my own due diligence on any dealer prior to engaging.

Not sold a car at this value but have always sold privately, never had any real problems. It takes a bit longer but I have met some nice people.

I sold my car through Carwow or rather I didn't.
The buyers haven't been in touch, so it's now on offer here.
Last car I had, I traded, a lot less money and hassle, but that was 8 years ago.

All bar one of the 50 odd cars I've sold over the years have been private. Of those all but two have gone painlessly. But, and this is a big but, aside from an RS6 I sold most have been <£10k where it's a case of cash or bank transfer and job done, as others have said a lot more people can call on <£10k without the need of a loan than >£30k

For a £30k car that's an every day car (albeit a bloody good one - why are you selling!) and with such a small gap between what you want and what you're offered I'd 100% take the carwow offer and be done with it. If you've a collectable/classic/weekend car I'd still be tempted to try private first as there tend to be more people around with big money to drop on a weekend toy than a workday car!

The one trade deal I did for my M140i couldn't have been less painless. Price agreed up front, guy arrived by train, I picked him up in the car at night in the rain he didn't even want to look around it he could "tell" it was a well looked after car. Bank transfer done whilst doing paperwork and he drove off. The longest part of the transaction was picking him up from the station!

Either way, good luck with the sale and what are you changing it for?

For the money, and I know this sounds crazy to pass up chance of that extra cash, but I'd use Carwow or such like. Less hassle, but also bear in mind that if you sell private can easily eat into that profit with time to sell (e.g. tax, etc) plus a couple of listings on Autotrader or the like can soon mount up cost wise.

Thanks for your input buddy, circumstances have changed so need to sell but its the best ever car i've had and it will take a while for the awesome memories to go away. Don't think you'll find many people who haven't enjoyed their time with a M340i.

Seems lots of folk are prepared to pay a lot of money to avoid 'faff'.

How long does it take you to earn £1.5-2k, after tax? If you're on an average UK salary of £35k, that's roughly 3.5 weeks of full-time work.

Personally I'd rather at least attempt a private sale first, before immediately giving up almost a month's wages. But experience helps. I've sold more than 20 cars privately, from £1k to £33k. I know how to market a car, and I'm comfortable dealing with people.

My point holds nonetheless. I charge £1,000/day for my work. And £1,000 is still a lot of money for me.

Then again, I happily pay money for people to do my gardening, clean my home and other things that people prefer to do themselves, so I guess to each their own smile

Nice to see someone considering selling for a sensible price.

Most private sellers are asking more than main dealers atm.

Agreed on the private sale - if I said to someone I'd give them £2k tax free to take a few phone calls, field some emails and meet and greet a few people for a day they'd bite your hand off. Yet loads just p/x cars without a second thought. I've saved tens-of-thousands of pounds over the years buying/selling privately.

That being said....no way I'd sell an M-car, AMG or RS model privately. I'd be tempted to try some of the owner forums, but otherwise, the stories I've heard of people trying to sell them privately get a lot of....interesting visitors, bruv. Both people I know who sold an AMG and RS4 privately very quickly decided to take the hit and give it to a dealer.

I think you'd be very surprised. People aren't always sensible when it comes to cars.

I'd be selling it privately every time if I wasn't in a rush.

Where you based? I'd sell it for you for a fee. biggrin
