To disguise his scent as a wolf/predator and make him smell like a herbivore. Next he'll sneak up on a horse and eat it smile so you'd better bath him before he gets carried away.

I THINK, but I am not sure, that it is to hide their scent for hunting. i.e. they don't smell like a predator but they smell like a prey animal so they can sneak up on a target (pedigree chum can be easily startled)................

Sadly, one of my bi**es does this as well, but the male does not.

You have a very rare ninja dog - he's trying to disguise his scent so he can sneak up on and kill pirates. HTH.

You're lucky. My dog not only rolls around in st, but also eats it. She's quite fond of our cat's deposits.

B***es will also do this. My understanding is because when raising puppies in the den, they keep it clean. That means eating the puppy poo......

How to stop her rolling in Poo? That's a tricky one. Put her on lead whenever near it? Tell her off as soon as she starts rolling? This is what we are doing with ours but it doesn't seem to work !!

Pedigree Chum doesn't need hunting...

Rolling is a very natural thing to do and is scent related.Difficult to stop, especially if the dogs free.

Eating it is a very different thing though. Some dieticians claim its down to mineral deficiencies.

Thankfully, my two dont, but my parents bh PBGV does and its not a dog you allow a good face licking I can assure you !

I can't see the logic in that, I mean isn't an animal going to think feck I think there is a turd sneaking up on me and leg it from the ickky poo?

Our Lab thinks going to the Forest is like going to a massive buffet - he tries to eat all poo he can find.

It is worse at the moment as he is on a diet!

My old welsh springer used to do that...

Only after she got shampooed though.

It wouldn't know it was sneaking up though... It would just smell poo and think all is well because the only smells around are their own...... No nasty predator smell mooching nearby.......

The vet explained the hunting theory to me (we have two labs) and also added that dogs rolling in st is a bit like a human wearing aftershave/perfume it makes them feel good!

Now I've worn some dodgy aftershave over the years and some of it's smelt st but I think he was going a bit too far with that one!

It's really difficult to stop them, however my dog will stop if I shout his name and say no before he goes into a full roll. Once he rolls it's much harder to stop him! It took a while to teach him this.
