1990 LOTUS ESPRIT

Powered by Lotus' 2.2-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, the Esprit Turbo combined dramatic wedge-shaped styling with the engaging driving characteristics for which the marque became renowned.

This attractive 1990 example is presented in Calypso Red with black leather upholstery, complemented by distinctive OZ split-rim alloy wheels, which our vendor advises are worth approximately £5,000.

Indicating 84,538 miles at the time of cataloguing, in current ownership for eight years, having been acquired in 2018.

Accompanied by a substantial lever-arch history file documenting maintenance and mechanical work over the years, together with the original stamped service book. The vendor advises that the original engine remains fitted, with the most recent service completed in 2025, less than 500 miles ago, and the timing belt replaced approximately 1,500 miles ago.

Considerable mechanical attention during 2026 included a new clutch fitted by a Lotus specialist, replacement clutch slave cylinder, crankshaft oil seals and turbo oil return pipe, together with a gearbox oil change. Further maintenance in 2025 included a new fuel pump, fuel return regulator and hoses, refurbished distributor, spark plugs, ignition leads and battery.

In 2023, the twin carburettors were stripped, ultrasonically cleaned, rejetted and professionally calibrated, including computer balancing. New suspension springs and shock absorbers were also fitted, whilst both pop-up headlamp motors were reconditioned. Other maintenance included a full engine flush and replacement cooling fans, whilst additional upgrades include an uprated turbocharger, dump valve, competition exhaust manifold, twin-exit exhaust system and enhanced braking with upgraded discs and four-pot calipers all round.

The removable roof panel is accompanied by its storage bag and a rare wind deflector. Further equipment includes a tracker, alarm, battery isolator, trickle charger and fire extinguishers for the engine compartment and cockpit. During current ownership, a new stereo, four speakers and associated wiring were installed prior to the fitment of new carpets.

With its dramatic styling and unmistakable turbocharged character, this distinctive Esprit offers an appealing opportunity to enjoy a true British performance icon. Recently fitted with two new rear tyres and accompanied by an MOT valid until February 2027.
