Background:

Introduced in 1999, the C215-generation Mercedes-Benz CL-Class represented the two-door coupé interpretation of the flagship S-Class, combining its considerable luxury and technological sophistication with elegant pillarless bodywork and a more sporting character.

The CL55 AMG took this formula considerably further, courtesy of AMG's hand-finished 5.4-litre M113 V8, producing approximately 360bhp and driving the rear wheels through a five-speed automatic transmission. Unlike the later supercharged versions, these earlier CL55s remained naturally aspirated, offering effortless performance accompanied by the distinctive soundtrack of a large-capacity AMG V8.

The C215 also introduced Mercedes-Benz's sophisticated Active Body Control (ABC) suspension, designed to minimise body movement whilst maintaining the ride comfort expected of a luxury grand tourer.

Today, the naturally-aspirated CL55 AMG represents an interesting chapter in the development of AMG's flagship coupés, combining considerable performance with traditional Mercedes-Benz refinement and a comparatively understated appearance.

The Car:

Dating from 2002, this attractive CL55 AMG has covered a documented 82,105 miles from new and is accompanied by a partial service history, including records of servicing and preventative maintenance. Powered by the 5.4-litre M113 V8, the car retains the character of the earlier AMG models, with its substantial torque and smooth power delivery particularly well suited to the CL's grand touring nature.

Most recently, on 14th May 2026 at 82,101 miles, the Mercedes received an engine service, whilst the air-conditioning system was also re-gassed to its specified 950g capacity. The car has an MOT valid until 27th April 2027.

Our vendor reports that the CL55 drives exceptionally well, with the ABC suspension functioning correctly and the various electrical and comfort features operating as intended.

The interior specification is particularly appealing, with its combination of Exclusive leather, Alcantara and electrically adjustable multi-contour seating providing the appropriately luxurious environment expected of Mercedes-Benz's flagship AMG coupé. Externally, the car retains its original 19-inch AMG alloy wheels, which have recently been refurbished and are fitted with Pirelli P Zero tyres all round.

Condition:

Described by our vendor as presenting particularly well, this CL55 AMG is reported to be in excellent cosmetic condition for its age and mileage. The bodywork is said to be entirely free from visible corrosion, with none of the bubbling that can affect examples of this generation. Only minor marks and imperfections are noted, consistent with a motor car now approaching 25 years old.
