2013 LAND ROVER DEFENDER

There are modified Defenders, and then there are examples whose provenance and quality of execution place them in an altogether different category. This 2013 Land Rover Defender 110 XS Utility is one such example. Originally built from new as a Twisted French Edition, it was subsequently developed further by Twisted before its interior was completely redesigned and handcrafted by Outlander Vehicles in Scotland.

Twisteds original conversion included the P6 performance package, comprising an ECU recalibration, performance air filter and stainless-steel exhaust. It was also fitted with satin-black 18-inch Twisted Sport alloy wheels, BFGoodrich tyres, progressive suspension and, in 2017, a four-speed automatic transmission. Together, these upgrades make the Defender considerably more responsive, composed and effortless to drive while preserving the character of the original 110.

Its extensive exterior specification includes a Twisted LED daytime-running-light front bumper, upgraded grille and vent set, crystal headlights, painted mirror backs, steering guard, tubular rear step bumper, tubular spare-wheel carrier and 95mm LED rear lights. The chassis was spray-protected from new and treated again in 2018, while stainless-steel body bolts and a gloss-black rear crossmember provide further evidence of the considered approach taken throughout the build. Panoramic side glass was added in 2021, giving the Utility body a cleaner profile and introducing considerably more light into the rear cabin.

The interior is perhaps the defining element of this particular Defender. Outlander Vehicles transformed the cabin using mottled brown leather with contrasting ivory stitching, Alcantara headlining and beautifully handcrafted walnut flooring. A bespoke wooden cubby box and automatic transmission console sit alongside billet handles, retrimmed door cards and a custom-built double-DIN audio and media system integrated into a body-coloured dashboard panel.

Extensive soundproofing, carpeting and rubber protective mats improve refinement without compromising practicality, while a full-height dog guard and high-level loadspace shelf retain the versatility expected of a five-seat Defender 110 Utility.

Having covered only 28,928 miles from new, this Defender has been serviced annually and maintained meticulously throughout its life. Twisteds involvement extends far beyond cosmetic enhancement, encompassing its engine, transmission, suspension, chassis, lighting and exterior hardware, while Outlanders craftsmanship has created an entirely individual cabin.

This is neither a recently assembled restomod nor a superficial cosmetic conversion. It is a beautifully resolved Defender that has been thoughtfully developed over time by two respected British specialists, combining the unmistakable character of the original 110 with improved performance, effortless automatic usability and an interior that would be exceptionally difficult to recreate.
