2023 Dacia Duster Journey 1.0 TCe, I can honestly say it's one of the best value SUVs on the market. If you're looking for a practical, reliable family car without spending a fortune, it's difficult to ignore. The first thing that stands out is the driving position. You sit nice and high, visibility is excellent, and the car feels easy to place on the road. Around town, the light steering and compact dimensions make it surprisingly easy to manoeuvre and park. The 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine isn't designed for speed, and with 90 PS you'll notice it needs to be worked harder when joining motorways or overtaking. However, for everyday commuting, school runs and country roads, it performs well enough. The six-speed manual gearbox is smooth, and the engine remains economical if driven sensibly. Ride comfort is another strong point. It soaks up potholes and uneven roads far better than many more expensive crossovers. The suspension is soft without feeling overly floaty, making long journeys comfortable for both driver and passengers. The raised ride height also makes getting in and out very easy. Running costs are another highlight. Insurance is generally reasonable, servicing is affordable, and the fuel economy is respectable for a petrol SUV. Dacia's reputation for using proven Renault mechanical components also provides confidence in long-term reliability. Of course, it's not perfect. Wind and road noise become noticeable at motorway speeds, the interior materials aren't premium, and the 90 PS engine can feel underpowered when the car is fully loaded. If you regularly tow or spend most of your time on fast roads, the more powerful 1.3 TCe may be the better choice.
