The Mercedes-Benz G 500 Cabriolet

It is one of the most exclusive variants of the legendary G-Class, combining uncompromising off-road capabilities with the open-top driving experience of a cabriolet. As the successor to the early G-Class cabriolets, the model was launched in 2001 and remained in production until 2008. With its short wheelbase, electrically operated fabric soft top and classic styling, the G-Class Cabriolet remains an exceptional vehicle within the Mercedes-Benz model range, especially in its second generation. Model code 463.254 was offered exclusively as a three-door Cabriolet and held a special position within the series. The G 500 Cabriolet is powered by the 5.0-litre naturally aspirated V8 engine from the M113 series, with a displacement of 4,966 ccm. The longitudinally mounted eight-cylinder engine develops 296 hp and a maximum torque of 456 Nm. Power is transmitted as standard via a five-speed automatic transmission and permanent all-wheel drive with a transfer box, as well as the three characteristic differential locks that have always been hallmarks of the G-Class. The Cabriolet thus combines on-road performance with the exceptional off-road capabilities for which the G-Class is renowned worldwide.

With a wheelbase of 2,400 millimetres and an overall length of 4,275 millimetres, the G 500 Cabriolet remains particularly compact and manoeuvrable. At the same time, the robust construction, combined with rigid axles, coil springs and permanent four-wheel drive, offers maximum stability even under the most demanding operating conditions. The Cabriolet’s kerb weight is around 2,375 kilograms. As part of its revamp, from 2001 onwards the G-Class was given a significantly modernised interior featuring higher-quality materials, new comfort features and numerous technical improvements. Despite these developments, the vehicle remains true to its original design and retains the unmistakable character of the G-Class. The open-top design gives the model a unique combination of a luxurious touring car and a fully-fledged off-roader, a vehicle class that hardly any other manufacturer offers in a comparable form. Today, the Mercedes-Benz G 500 Cabriolet, model number 463.254, ranks among the rarest and most sought-after variants of the classic G-Class. The low production run of just a few hundred vehicles, the combination of a powerful V8 engine, short wheelbase and open-top body, as well as its exceptional versatility, make this model a sought-after collector’s item and one of the last open-top off-road vehicles from Mercedes-Benz featuring uncompromising off-road technology.

Among the last G 500 Cabriolets of this generation, it was completed in November 2007 and first registered to Daimler AG in Stuttgart in January 2008. The vehicle, finished in Chromite Black Metallic and featuring stylish cognac leather, remained in the manufacturer’s possession for a year before passing into private ownership for the first time in 2009. The Starnberg-based doctor owned and used the vehicle for almost a decade, during which time the Cabriolet clocked up the majority of its mileage. In 2018, it was sold to its third registered, a Munich-based entrepreneur, who used the car until 2026. It was subsequently purchased by Mechatronik.
