Description

Here we have our lovely rare example 1955 TR2. 71 years old and still turning heads.
Ours is a local car to us, we met the owner several times, complete with a massive portfolio of history he finally agreed to sell with this example ready for its new chapter in life.
Details we hold and have are as follows;
UK car, built on Tuesday, 24th May 1955 and supplied to Norhdown Motors. It was first registered on 10th June 1955.
The second owner bought the car in 1971, ran it for a couple of years and then laid it up in about 1973. He retired in 1996 and decided to spend some of his pension on restoring the car.
Over 1996 – 1997 it had a full nut and bolt rebuild and was fitted with a newly rebuilt body shell and painted by the Northern TR Centre at Sedgefield. Unfortunately, he then became ill, and the car was never quite finished. When he passed away it was left to his son, who parked it up, covered, in a modern garage for another 20 years. The last owner purchased the car in June 2020. It had clearly never been on the road - underneath were just a few cobwebs - but the engine had been turned over regularly. It had 99, 393 miles on the speedo, which was probably genuine. It had not been run for 47 years.
A recommissioning took place and includes: Replaced or overhauled all brake and clutch hydraulics plus front drums and shoes, new alloy petrol tank, Steering box overhauled with new bearings and Revington self-adjusting top plate, New front springs, Replacement rebuilt gearbox – all synchro with J-type overdrive on 2nd, 3rd and 4th. Supplied by Pete Cox - details above at a cost of £1,500 and built to TR6+ spec, Two broken cylinder head studs and a core plug replaced. Having removed the cylinder head to do this, it’s evident that hardened valve seat inserts have been fitted to enable running on lead free petrol, Carburettors overhauled, New Blockley tyres (the old ones were unused but 24 years old), New mohair hood stick cover, Speedometer overhauled and re-calibrated, Numerous other bits and pieces, Treated underside with Lanoguard, The paintwork is untouched since 1997 bar a polish, which is a testament to the quality of the work.
For completeness in the description, there are a few deviations from original TR2 spec:
The rebuilt bodyshell, according to the receipt, was from a TR3 (though the TR2 front apron was clearly retained.) However, I can find no record online of any differences between TR2 and early TR3 body tubs, The seats are from a TR3a (but much more comfortable than TR2 seats!) The interior is finished in black vinyl with green piping rather than the original brown, The wing mouldings are stainless steel rather than body coloured plastic, The bonnet and boot hinges are chrome plated rather than body coloured, it has a mohair hood, tonneau cover and side screens, The gearbox obviously. Overdrive makes it a much more pleasant and economical drive at motorway speeds.
Minor differences were common on restorations back in the day, when original parts were unobtainable. It does though have the extremely rare chrome trim around the mouth
It was back on the road in April 2021. Its longest trip has been to the MG Triumph 100 anniversary weekend at Silverstone in 2023. It won Best in Show at a local show a couple of years ago.
2000 miles in the last 5 years have been completed
New MOT with no advisories has been added in June 2026 plus a battery fitted
Early viewing is highly recommended to avoid disappointment
