⭕ VEHICLE SUMMARY
A true symbol of freedom and adventure, the VW Type 2 T1 Split Screen camper embodies the spirit of the open road with its timeless design and unmistakable character.
The 1962 Volkswagen Type 2 T1 Split Screen campervan, often affectionately referred to as the “Splitty”, has a rich history that cements its place as one of the most iconic vehicles of the 20th century.
Originally derived from the Volkswagen Type 2 Transporter, which debuted in 1950, the Split Screen was Volkswagen’s answer to the growing demand for practical, multi-purpose vehicles. Its simple yet ingenious design, featuring a rear-mounted air-cooled engine and forward-control layout, offered excellent interior space and versatility.
By the early 1960s, the Split Screen had become a global phenomenon, embraced not only as a dependable workhorse for tradespeople and businesses, but also as a lifestyle vehicle for families and adventurers.
Coming to market from almost 15 years with our vendor, this example is an SO42 variant, known for its distinctive pop-top roof, high-quality wood cabinetry, rock and roll bed, folding table, rear hatch, walk-through layout, and safari windows. The 1967 model year is particularly sought after, as it marked the final year of German split-screen production.
The van has been lowered to allow it to fit into a standard garage while retaining its roof rack. David has fitted a 1641cc air-cooled engine, along with a SCAT C25 camshaft, balanced cooling fan, and twin Weber carburettors. The van comes with a near-12-month MOT, valid until 12.04.2027.
