Description
Here we have a simply unrepeatable example of the ever-popular Mercedes Benz 280SL Pagoda.
Originally supplied to the USA, this car was sold to a gentleman who lived between London and Monaco by RM Auctions in 2002 with a recorded mileage of 18,190 which by the condition of the car was believed to be genuine. At this time the car was converted to European specification.
In 2013, the current owner took custodianship of this Pagoda, and two things stuck him. The first being that due to the hot climates that the car had been living in, the paintwork had faded, and secondly that he didn't think that Powder Blue really did the car justice.
He subsequently employed a an ex-Mercedes Benz technician to carefully dismantle the car, which he then had stripped to bare metal, and meticulously repainted in the more flattering hue of Grey Blue Metallic (906).
During this time, the engine and transmission were also taken down for inspection, and bearings etc replaced as necessary. Virtually every principal component is original to the car, with replacement of bearings, gaskets and bushes etc only replaced due to age.
Done without budgetary constraint, the standard of work is second-to-none and a joy to observe.
The car has covered a handful of dry miles since completion and now shows an odometer reading of 21,303 which is believed to be genuine.
Any inspection welcome.
