This is a UK car supplied new by Toyota main dealer Monty’s of Sheffield, registered on 4th May 1990. It was bought by an older gentleman as a retirement present for himself. He drove it for 22,400 miles over its first 17 years whilst keeping it garaged. It was inherited by his daughter and registered to her in 2009. She did not drive it, and sold it to the local garage in January 2014 where I bought it from. I had always wanted a Mk2 MR2, and had to jump at the chance to buy a mint low mileage example that had effectively only had one careful retiree owner.
I have owned the MR2 for nearly 12 years. I never imagined that I would ever sell this car, but I’m leaving the UK for long enough that it’s not viable to store the car for my return. I’ve seen a lot of comments from people who regret selling their MR2 and I don’t want to join them, but circumstances are forcing me to sell it. It is a very well-loved car that needs to go to a good home!
It is currently on c.75,800 miles, which as a 35 year old car is only c.2,000 miles per year. It has full service history and has just been serviced and MOT’d (runs until 5th October 2026). It’s running very nicely, ready for a new owner who won’t need to do any work on it for a while. It is a very original car that has never been driven or modified by any ‘boy racers’ (I’m 50) and has been loved by two mature owners. This is immediately obvious when driving it, as it feels tight, responsive and smooth.
Recent service on 10th November 2025: Oil change, spark plugs, air filter, distributor cap/ rotor arm.
It has had in my ownership:
September 2024: New Genuine Toyota shocks and springs, front pads
October 2023: Timing belt
October 2021: Full ‘bumper to bumper’ check at MR MR2 in Sheffield. Had new radiator and coolant, handbrake cables, engine/ gearbox mounts, engine support bars, throttle body disassembly and clean.
May 2021: Alternator
September 2016: Oil sump pan
November 2015: Modern spec Toyota wiper arms
Wheels: I have used the aftermarket alloy wheels seen in the photos since I bought the car. These are now in need of refurbishment/ replacement, but the original wheels have been preserved in fantastic condition.
Upgraded parts: I fitted an Alpine head unit that was the top of the range model at the time (Alpine CDE 178BT). This has Bluetooth, a microphone for phone calls, CD player and USB/ 3. 5mm stereo jack inputs in the glovebox, allowing for music on memory sticks. The original wiper arms were an old Japanese fitment. I imported some modern fitting OEM arms from Toyota in Japan, which have Bosch Aerotwin wipers. The headlights have upgrade bulbs.
The original Rev1 gearshifts had an enormous lever, which I’ve replaced with a short shift kit (like later revisions). I’ve also replaced the orange front and side indicators with black tinted versions with chrome bulbs. I think this modernises the car and they continue nicely from the black stripes down the side of the car, but they could be quickly swapped back to the originals. The car will be supplied with the original head unit, gear shift, indicators and alloys, and could be returned to original spec within an afternoon.
Car & Classic valuations:
• Fair: £3,526
• Good: £6,800
• Excellent: £8,495
• Concourse: £12,704
My mechanic tells me that on this scale I should consider it ‘Excellent’, but given minor cosmetic blemishes to the paintwork and for a quick sale, I’m listing it at £7,999 and I’m open to sensible offers. Please get in touch with any questions or to arrange a viewing. Thanks for looking!
