1999 Range Rover P38 4.6 HSE

This late-model Range Rover P38 is a properly handsome thing. A true survivor of Britain’s last classically boxy 4x4 era, presented here in exceptionally original condition, with a vast and meticulous history file to back it all up. Finished in Metallic Niagra Grey with Winchester Grey Piped interior and clear glass — a combination that gives this p38 a quietly confident air of occasion.

Under the bonnet is the buttery-smooth 4.6-litre V8, producing 215bhp and mated to a four-speed automatic gearbox. Crucially, as a late example, it benefits from the updated Bosch engine management system, which significantly improves reliability over earlier GEMS-equipped cars. The odometer currently reads just 99,000 miles — a modest number for a car of this calibre and vintage.

First registered in late 1999, the current custodian has enjoyed the car for the past 12 months lavishing care and considerable expense to ensure this isn’t just another tired example, but one that stands proudly amongst the best of them.

The Niagra Grey paintwork presents beautifully, save for a few stone chips on the bonnet — otherwise, the bodywork is impressively straight and honest, retaining its factory charm and proud, unmodified lines. A discreet modified exhaust system with a nice burble adds to its charm. This Range Rover retains its 18-inch Hurrican alloys have just been professionally refurbished and wear matching, correct-fitment Pirelli tyres.

Inside, the cabin is a true highlight. That well preserved leather remains in excellent condition throughout, having recently been cleaned, fed, and treated. The original heated windscreen is still present and free of damage, and all the correct late-spec features are in working order — dual-zone climate control with ice cold air conditioning, cruise control, heated electric seats (with driver’s memory), Harmon Kardon Sound, and a tilt/slide sunroof.

Mechanically, this P38 has received the attention so many others sorely lack. Within the last six months alone, over £5,000 has been invested in high-quality preventative maintenance and mechanical overhaul. Highlights include a new heavy-duty battery, new brakes, full air suspension system service, front axle completely rebushed, engine fully serviced, props greased, air suspension valve block rebuilt, new wiper blades, coolant hoses and a new water pump. The often-overlooked blend motors and heater matrix O-rings have been sorted, and the HVAC display unit was replaced to eliminate the common pixelation issues. All shock absorbers have also been replaced with an upgraded Bilstein set up. Underneath, the chassis has been cleaned and presents very well with no rust or underseal hiding any sins. Last month the droplinks were replaced along with the brake pads, whilst the suspension was recalibrated prior to an MOT test resulting in a clean pass.

This attention to detail results in a car that drives beautifully; the kind of quiet, composed ride that belies its age. It recently completed a 150 -mile journey with zero fuss, proving it to be not just a collector’s delight, but a genuinely usable and enjoyable modern classic.

Accompanying the car is a complete book pack, stamped service portfolio, original in-car entertainment and manuals, three keys, and a thick file of invoices and MOTs charting its life in reassuring detail.

In short, this is not your average P38. It’s a clean, late-spec, tastefully appointed Vogue that wants for nothing and delivers everything, whether you’re headed for the Highlands, a muddy shoot in Wiltshire, or just want to arrive somewhere with more presence than anything this side of a G-Wagen.
