The Bentley Continental SC Mulliner
When Bentley and Rolls-Royce went their separate ways in 1998, Rolls-Royce to BMW and Bentley to the Volkswagen Group, an era of British luxury motoring was about to come to an end. While Rolls-Royce in Goodwood was preparing for the future with the Phantom, Volkswagen was modernising the Bentley plant in Crewe. But before this new era began, a short transitional period saw the production of vehicles that are now considered particularly collectible due to their low production numbers. One of the rarest and most sought-after representatives of this era is the Bentley Continental SC, where ‘SC’ stands for ‘Sedanca Coupé’. The Continental SC is based on the sportier Continental T, which is characterised by a ten centimetre shorter wheelbase and wider wheel arches, compared to the standard model. Bentley combined this basis with a special body concept: a two-part, removable glass roof over the driver and front passenger, supplemented by a fixed glass roof over the rear passengers. This was a modern homage to the classic Sedanca coupé of the 1930s. This Targa-like design makes the SC a mixture of coupé and cabriolet and gives it a character all of its own. The most exclusive version of the Continental SC is the Continental SC Mulliner, which was produced in strictly limited numbers between 1999 and 2000. In total, only six examples of this luxurious Mulliner version left the factory halls and all in left-hand drive configuration. This special variant of the Continental SC was not introduced as the successor to an existing model, but rather complemented the range as the most high-end version. It combined the classic elegance of the Continental SC with unique, sporty, dynamic accents and the characteristic signature of the in-house Mulliner manufacture.
Technically, the Continental SC Mulliner is based on the Continental T and is equipped with its powerful V8 turbo engine, producing 426 hp at 4000 rpm and an impressive torque figure of 875 Nm at 2200 rpm ensuring superior driving performance. The sprint from 0 to 100 kph is achieved in 6.0 seconds and the top speed is electronically limited to 245 kph. The model also clearly stands out visually from the standard version. It has extended wheel arches, a wider track, mesh air in- and out takes in the front and at the rear and redesigned bumpers with wire inserts to match the radiator grille. Sporty side skirts, 18-inch five-spoke alloy wheels and the Mulliner emblem on the boot lid emphasise the individuality of this vehicle. With a length of 534 cm, a width of 192 cm and a height of 146 cm as well as a kerb weight of 2,610 kg, the Continental SC Mulliner makes an imposing appearance on the road. The chassis numbers of this sensational special edition, always have the letter Z in the fifth position and range from 65000 to 65101. The model series of the Bentley Continental SC and the SC Mulliner variant are mixed-numbered, with the numbers 65075 to 65100 not being assigned.
About the vehicle offered here:
This unique Bentley Continental SC Mulliner is one of six examples built and stands out even within this extremely limited series with a number of exceptional features. The exterior colour is Silver Tempest, a rare metallic silver shade that changes its effect depending on the angle of the sunlight, giving the vehicle a fascinating presence. The large Continental SC and Mulliner lettering on the boot lid have been omitted and instead only the Bentley emblem, which also functions as the boot lock, has been kept. Particularly noteworthy is the interior, which in this example was fitted with an aluminium dashboard, which was only the case in this and one other vehicle. Another rarity is the McIntosh high-fidelity sound system, which was one of the highest-quality and rarest equipment options of the time.
This Bentley has also been recognised beyond the circle of collectors. It was first delivered by British Motors to the first owner in Monaco and remained on the Côte d'Azur for many years before the Continental SC Mulliner passed into the possession of a new owner. The car was one of only twelve models portrayed in the Book "Bentley Continental of the 90s”. A publication that documents the most significant and exclusive vehicles of this model series. In 2019, it was also displayed at the renowned FuoriConcorso, an event overlooking Lake Como for design icons and world-class one-off cars. With a mileage of just 25,000 kilometres since first delivery, this Mulliner is in very good condition. Since the last service of the vehicle, which is registered in Germany, it has only been driven for 50 kilometres, ensuring that it is in perfect mechanical condition. In addition, the original on-board folder including all operating manuals and maintenance booklets is present. Every detail of this vehicle tells a story of individuality, exclusivity and perfect craftsmanship, making it a unique part of British automotive culture on the threshold of the new millennium. Our sales staff will be happy to answer any detailed questions you may have. Please note that vehicle viewings are only possible by prior appointment.
