1988 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 G50 For Sale

The Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 was introduced in 1984 to replace the longstanding SC model and in Porsche’s typically evolutionary fashion, despite a myriad of detail changes, it was still unmistakenly a 911. Porsche built around 80,000 911 Carrera 3.2s between 1983 and 1989, still low numbers compared to today’s production numbers, but not bad for a car that was supposed to have been killed off in favour of the front-engined 928.
After years of largely incremental power increases the Carrera 3.2 introduced a rather more generous horsepower hike: 231bhp at 5900rpm from its 3.2-litre flat six, whilst torque increased to 209lbs/ft at 4800rpm. Motronic fuel injection made it more fuel efficient and this was the first standard 911 to officially break the 150mph barrier too.
Early Carrera 3.2s retained the Type 915 gearbox, but in 1987 the 911 got the gearbox that many would say it really deserved: The Getrag G50, that would go on to serve the 911 through the 964 and 993 ranges.
Along with many technical upgrades, the new Carrera also received a much plusher interior, with improved ventilation (always an air-cooled 911 issue) sound insulation and two/three way electric seats.
The ultimate and arguably most desirable G-Series 911 then, particularly when finished in the classic Guards Red. Which is handy, because that’s what we’ve got here.
Simply Red
The definitive 80s Porsche colour? Without a doubt, hugely popular with us Brits and the poster car for a generation.
This particular Carrera 3.2 was delivered on Jan 1, 1988, which for its first owner, must have been a pretty good way to see in the New Year. Indeed, Porsche Centre Wilmslow must have opened especially.
Guards Red and with a black leather interior, it really is the classic Carrera spec. And the G50 gearbox. Some will argue for the earlier Type 915 ‘box as the authentic 911 experience, but the G50 was long overdue, when it arrived in 1987.
And like most UK Carrera 3.2s, this one is in Sports spec. That is to say 16in Fuchs wheels, front and rear spoilers and Bilstein dampers. Electric sunroof, windows and mirrors, together with a rear window wiper were further options specified.
So what more could you wish for? Well, rightly or wrongly, mileage is something to consider for many and it’s difficult to quibble, that lower is better from a sales point of view. With that in mind, the 42,000-miles that this Carrera 3.2 has amassed from new, is going to be nothing less than desirable for any prospective buyer.
Talking of which, this is a 911 that we have sold three times before and we’re obviously happy to have it back in stock. It was last supplied by us with a level of recommissioning since coming out of dry storage and will be supplied again with a PS stamp of approval, preparation, service and a fresh MOT.
Prior to this, the original service book has been reassuringly and regularly autographed, with a mix of Porsche Centre and Porsche specialist stamps, most recently by us.
As you would hope, the condition of this Carrera 3.2 is commensurate with its low mileage and having been routinely maintained over its 34-years, it drives as well as it looks.
In Summary
The most popular of the G-Series 911s, and for good reason. It offers the full classic 911 experience, combined with a level of reliability, refinement and ease of driving that make it a great starting point for someone new venturing into classic 911 ownership. This is an excellent example, that awaits its next custodians enjoyment.
