I’ve owned and loved this car for 22 years, and with regret, it is time for someone else to enjoy this wonderful car. With a youngish family, I really haven’t driven it much in recent years, and will be losing my garaging at the end of the summer, so it’s time to see reason and let her go.
Yes, it is high miles but has been maintained and still drives faultlessly. It’s never failed to start or indeed proceed! I have honestly no idea what it is worth, there are no real comparisons out there. It was valued for insurance purposes at £35k in 2000.
I’m not going to accept any offers for the first couple of weeks (partly because I’m not going to be around) and I’ll also not accept any offers unless you’ve not seen the car. I will make an exception if you want to leave a non-refundable deposit.
Car is in Alnmouth, where there is a mainline station halfway between York and Edinburgh. Also on the A1.
The good bits:
U.K. car, first sold in Northern Ireland (hence the plate). I’m the 3rd owner.
Despite the miles, the drivetrain feels really strong, and for a 30 year old car still pulls like a train with that amazing induction noise. Helped by a K&N filter and Dali SS exhaust.
6 speed gearbox with super light flywheel, fitted 35k miles ago. This is a much better gearbox than the 5 speed, with better ratios, a more consistent clutch feel, and a considerably cheaper replacement clutch cost - parts alone are over £1k cheaper, and they are far easier to fit and adjust than the twin plates in the 5 speed.
Recent (last year) cambelt service at garage where Honda Edinburgh’s ex master mechanic now works. He looks after all the NSX’s in Scotland that we know of. Also replaced water pump, sump and some buried engine electronics that looked to be perishing (but at that point still functional)
Tein racing suspension also maybe 35k old. Also lowered (have removed front lip spoiler as roads round me aren’t great)
Steering works well and really isn’t as bad as the “experts” would have you think. If you want manual steering new 91-94 racks are easily available on amayama for about £1k. S2000 conversions are also an option if you want a quicker rack.
Fresh MOT.
The bad bits (mileage aside)
Whilst the bodywork is structurally sound, there are stonechips, a couple of scrapes, a dent (in the boot so should be easy to pull out) and some corrosion spots (maybe 5 or 6, no more than a pound coin in size). As it is aluminium, I’m told it is surface corrosion and just needs to be sanded down. Anyway, the car looks great from a distance and can be enjoyed as is, but I would think sorting the bodywork would likely cost around £5k - certainly up here, but YMMV down south! I've tried to show some of these imperfections in the pics but they don't come across particularly well.
Honda’s interiors of the era were pretty robust, but still, the condition is commensurate with miles. There’s a split about a couple of inches long on the driver seat holster.
The ac doesn’t work. I last noticed it working about 8 years ago, but can’t recall the last time I tried to use it. Could be gas, clutch, or a seal somewhere.
The Tein suspension. Seemed like a good idea at the time, but either I’m getting older or the roads bumpier. Probably both. It would be great on track (never have though) but if I were to keep the car, I’d probably go back to OEM (about £250 a corner from amayama, or second hand that for all 4 on prime, if you’re lucky).
Speedo stopped working a couple of years ago when I went over a big bump. Prime tells me it is likely to be a screw in the back of the speedo come loose, but that the screw has a fragile wire running through the middle of it and so I’ve not touched it, but use a GPS digital speedo in the cigarette lighter.
I think that’s enough from me. If you’ve always wanted a manual NSX but can’t face the £80k+ that seems to be the going rate, this could be the car for you. A driver that you can upgrade at your leisure.
Let me know any questions and I’ll endeavour to answer them.
