The R230-generation SL was an instant hit following its public debut at the 2001 Frankfurt Auto Show and subsequent crowd-pleasing performance as the F1 Safety Car at the German Grand Prix at Hockenheim in the same year. The flagship models of the range were the mighty AMG models from the wizards at Affalterbach in the form of the V8-powered SL55 AMG and V12 Bi-Turbo SL65 AMG. The facelifted SL63 was launched in 2008 and replaced the previous SL55 model, the supercharged 5.5-litre V8 of the former model making way for the M156 normally-aspirated 6.2-litre V8 as seen in the S63 model. As to be expected with any new AMG SL, the SL63 offered exceptional performance from its 518bhp V8 with 465 lb/ft torque mated to an all new MCT 7-speed automatic transmission with steering wheel-mounted paddle shift.
