1968 Mercedes 280SL
A UK supplied right hand drive Pagoda with hard and soft tops in superb condition having been sparingly used and carefully maintained since a no expense spared restoration by all the right people.
The Pagoda was an extremely good example prior to this work, however, the new owner demanded Pagoda perfection. To this end Roger Edwards who previously maintained the car dealt with the mechanical renovation including a full engine rebuild which the new owner insisted upon despite being told by R Edwards that it was not necessary. Mercedes body supremo Nigel Cooper undertook a full body strip repair and repaint and celebrated Mercedes interior specialist Kevin O Keefe retrimmed the car. This work is documented in the history file as is a great deal of additional detail such as the rebuild of the original Becker Grand Prix stereo with MP3/phone extension lead into the glovebox and Bluetooth.
We finally purchased this super Pagoda in Autumn 2016 after several attempts and sold it shortly after to a local collector. He enjoyed the car during 2017 and looked after it perfectly with a number of detailed invoices from specialists The SL Shop on file. He purchased a custom wind deflector from them which greatly reduces the draught during rapid open-air motoring.
We repurchased the Pagoda in 2020 and again sold it to a local and regular Hairpin customer with the highest standards. He has again used it very occasionally in fine weather, maintained it as required and stored it correctly.
We have just repurchased the car again and a recent drive on a fine Spring day reminded me how very good it is. Only a few UK specialists know how to set up a Pagoda properly and this is one of the very best, driving with a tautness and fluency that belies its 57 years. Squeaks and rattles are notable by their absence and every control works with the precision envisaged by the Mercedes Benz Factory who accepted only the very highest standards in this era.
Finished in Midnight Blue with Light Tan leather interior and Dark Blue Mohair Soft Top, perfect Pagoda colours, the car really is in the finest unmarked order throughout with exceptional detail. It comes with a comprehensive history file, original toolkit and hard top stand.
This is exactly how a Pagoda should be!
