1998 TVR Chimaera 450. PS5s, BBK, Gaz Coilovers
I have for sale my 1998 TVR Chimaera 450 in Cosmos Blue. Covered 44,000 miles. I purchased this in December 2023. I went to view as a bit of a curiosity really fully committed to the fact that I wouldn’t really get on with it, with it being a TVR it wont be as good as I was expecting and then I could just go and buy an MX5 like everyone else.
I couldn’t have been more wrong. Great noise from the V8, quiet on the road with mega steering and turn in, I genuinely couldn’t believe how good it was and consequently placed my deposit.
I have thoroughly enjoyed this car over the last almost year and a half but am moving towards doing my motorbike license and unfortunately cant have/keep both with just a single garage.
Car is in good overall condition (there are some marks as expected) and recently had a good amount of work done at Iain Daniels Classis Motorsport. Under his care the following was replaced:
• All ignition components, leads, cap, rotor arm, coil, amplifier, plugs
• New braided power steering hoses
• New stainless coolant lines
• New silicone hose kit
• New fans
• New otter switch
• New Lambda sensors
• New MAF sensor
• Plug extenders removed and heat socks fitted over the plugs/leads
• New manifold gaskets
• New oil pressure sender
• New speedo transducer
• New alternator and battery
• New throttle cable
• New stepper motor
• New air filter and full service
During my ownership the car has ran fine with no major issues. During colder mornings it can be a bit grumbly for about ten seconds but after that runs sweet.
There are also some notable and worthwhile upgrades present on the car, namely Gaz Blue Coil overs which give a great and amazingly compliant ride and a High Spec Motorsport big front brake kit to bring everything back down to more sensible speeds relatively quickly. I also removed the standard TVR alloys wheels in 16in rear and 15 in front as the tyres available in those sizes did not meet my standards. I replaced them with some Bola B2R wheels in 17in size all around, these in my opinion raise the look of the car and save some decent weight over the standard items. All four wheels are fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport 5 Tyres all around in staggered fitment to maintain the standard cars front stance bias.
As with all cars of this age there are some apologies to be expected and I have described all of this below in as much detail as I can. I have taken the points below into account while pricing the car, with these items addressed it would be a 17-20k car. Please let me know if you have any further questions on any of these points.
• The front of the car has some stone chips as should be expected with any TVR with 44k miles. I considered getting these touched in but decided against it in the end as I wanted the car to remain usable without getting too worried about picking up additional chips on the road.
• The roof is ok and watertight but is slightly worn in places, a new roof isn’t necessary as the current one is more than fit for purpose but some new fabric would lift the car to a new level I think, should the new owner wish to do so.
• The outriggers are solid and the car can be jacked up using them with no issues at all but they are original and whilst at the time of writing the condition of them has never been mentioned on the MOT (they are solid but maybe a bit tatty) it would be naïve to think they will never need replacing in the future.
That’s pretty much it. It’s a good solid car with a valid MOT until October 2025 and I think it will serve its new owner well.
Happy to answer any other questions. Please send me a message and we can discuss.
I have the original TVR booklets and two keys!
Thanks
