Porsche Carrera GT
The Porsche Carrera GT
It was before dawn in the early hours of 28 September 2000 when Porsche presented the Carrera GT concept car to the world press in Paris. Walter Röhrl was at the wheel of the new super sports car. He piloted the V10 mid-engined racer across Place Charles-de-Gaulle, which is even better known as Place de l'Étoile because its cobblestones form a star from which the Arc de Triomphe rises. Röhrl had the job of transferring the sheer power of the engine via the rear axle onto the wet and slippery pavement of the square in front of the international media on this rainy morning. The two-time world rally champion mastered the task with aplomb: the pictures of Röhrl in the open-top Carrera GT on the way from the Arc de Triomphe to the Louvre, escorted by French motorbike policemen, went around the world as an automotive sensation. With this study, Porsche had defined the new status quo for sports cars and pushed the boundaries of what was possible. Children hung posters of the concept car in their bedrooms and many enthusiasts wanted to order one. But it didn't exist yet. Porsche first had to finalise the development of the Carrera GT and then finally build it. In 2000, this sports car was nothing more than a bold vision, created from the modules of a new LMP 2000 racing car, which was actually intended to compete for victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. For cost reasons, the decision was made not to return to Le Mans for the time being. This gave rise to the idea of shaking up the sports car world with the technical features of the internally designated 9R3. This was followed by the development of the study shown at the Mondial de l'Automobile in Paris.
There were various reasons why another two and a half years passed before the series version made its debut at the 2003 Geneva Motor Show. One of these was aerodynamics: the appearance of the production version was not to change significantly from the concept car. A sophisticated aerodynamic concept therefore had to be developed to ensure that the production car, which would later reach speeds of 330 km/h, could be safely pressed onto the road. Only the electrically extendable rear wing is visible. In addition, however, the entire carbon fibre underbody is covered. Together with a rear diffuser, the underbody geometry creates a ground effect similar to that of a racing car, which literally glues the car to the road. The biggest challenge, however, was the production of the monocoque chassis and the power unit carrier, which for the first time in a production Porsche were made entirely from lightweight, high-strength CFRP. In 2003, Porsche set up a special manufacturing facility at the new Leipzig plant for this purpose. Further refinements were added, such as seat shells moulded from Kevlar and therefore also very light, ceramic brake discs, double wishbone pushrod axles and the world's first two-disc dry clutch made of ceramic. With a disc diameter of 169 millimetres, this heavy-duty clutch is particularly compact, allowing a very low centre of gravity for the V10 and the 6-speed manual gearbox. Compared to the study, the displacement has been increased from 5.5 to 5.7 litres and the power output to 612 hp. Thanks to Walter Röhrl's influence, the production vehicle was even more purist than the concept car. The fully digital displays were replaced by classic instruments and instead of a gearbox with paddle shifters, the Carrera GT was equipped with a manual six-speed gearbox with a high-positioned gear knob.
About the vehicle offered here:
This Porsche Carrera GT is number 147 of 1,270 examples ever built and was first delivered in Belgium in 2005. Shortly after delivery, its owner decided to optimise the car for the racetrack. He had a one-off car built by the company GPR, with which he wanted to conquer the racetracks of Europe. The conversion costs at the time totalled over 220,000 euros. The task set for GPR was ambitious: nothing less than the world's fastest Carrera GT was to be built for the racetrack. This was achieved by using a Motec control unit, new, customised wishbones and track rods, as well as a new brake system from AP Racing. In addition, a new pedal set and a special high-performance clutch were installed. Magnesium rims from BBS, an automatic fire extinguishing system and a fuel system according to motorsport specifications were also added. The owner at the time had concrete plans for the Carrera GT, for example he wanted to use the car in the World Endurance Championship, but this was prevented by the regulations, as the car's massive power output meant that no adjustments could be made using the so-called ‘Balance of Performance’. The owner's plans thus came to nothing and the Carrera GT-R remained unused in his collection. After 10 years, the owner parted with the one-off car, which was auctioned off by Bonhams on 9 October 2015. The car was subsequently purchased by our company, but also remained unused for years. In autumn 2021, the car underwent a service. At the beginning of 2024, almost 20 years after the first delivery, the decision was made to restore the collector's item to its original form, which was easily possible thanks to the preservation of all original components. The vehicle will undergo a major customer service at the Porsche Centre Stuttgart before delivery, and the manufacturer's upcoming recall campaign will also be carried out at the same time. With a mileage of just 1,750 kilometres, this Carrera GT is now available for sale.
