EXTERIOR
This rare G60 looks great in Aubergine (Dark Burgundy) metallic, one of only three colours that were available on the Edition One. Although not 100% perfect, the paintwork is very original and presents to a high standard with a great depth of shine having just been treated to a full machine polish. Both sides of the car are nice and straight with good shut lines and a deep, uniform colour to every panel. The bumpers, rubbing strips, and wheel arch trims are also very sound. There is some age-related patina to the BBS alloy wheels but little to detract from the car’s overall impressive finish.
INTERIOR
A G60 Edition One is rare enough, but an Edition One with leather is almost unheard of. The light grey upholstery and carpets are a nice contrast against the Dark Burgundy paintwork and make for an airier-feeling interior. The leather on the seats is still notably supple and the deep bolsters are in excellent shape. Original Edition One details such as the leather-rimmed steering wheel, leather gear knob and handbrake grip have all worn very well, as have the dash and centre console with no damage to report. The factory data sticker is still present inside the boot confirming that it's an original Edition One model.
ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION
The engine bay is clean and tidy, not overly dressed to a concours standard but still in very good order with no signs of any accident damage. Originally a German-supplied car with stamped VW history until 84k miles, this G60 has been looked after primarily by specialists since arriving in the UK in 2010. In late 2023 a full rebuild of the engine and G-Lader supercharger were carried out, and most recently both clutch cylinders have been replaced.
Out on the road the car performs very well indeed. The G60’s supercharged engine is based on the GTI’s 8-valve unit and, unlike the 16-valve, retains the free-revving willingness that makes the standard Golf GTI such a pleasure to work hard. With 80 percent of full boost within 0.4 seconds of the driver touching the throttle, power delivery is instantaneous.
HISTORY FILE
This rare Edition One was first registered in Germany in March 1991. The original service book is still present and is stamped up to 84k miles, all by VW main agents. Since arriving in the UK in 2010 the car has been maintained largely by marque specialists and further benefits from a recent overhaul of the engine, supercharger, and clutch pipework.
On arrival into the UK the original KM clocks were replaced with an MPH unit from a 16v GTI. The car was then IVA-tested, MOT’d, and registered for UK road use. The speedo was not reset to zero however the accompanying UK paperwork and MOT certificates show the car to have driven only 7,900 miles over the last 14 or so years. It has been carefully dry stored when not in use and the V5C shows only three registered keepers.
