Mazda's known for doing things a little differently with its cars, so it should come as no surprise that the CX-30 isn't like most other compact SUVs. For starters, though it's small enough to be a comparison with cars like the Peugeot 2008 or Ford Puma, it's based on the underpinnings of a full-sized family hatchback rather than a supermini, which endows it with a grown-up character missing from many rivals. The engine line-up's curious too. No small-capacity turbocharged petrol engines here – you can choose from a pair of 2.0-litre units that don't have turbochargers. What they do have are mild hybrid systems to boost economy and, in the case of the range-topping SkyActiv-X, an incredibly clever compression ignition system that allows it to burn petrol in a similar fashion to diesel. The CX-30 certainly doesn't follow the crowd, then, and sticks out in a rather marmite way. There's less marmite in the cabin, which is the same as the Mazda 3 hatchback's and therefore high-quality and intuitive to use.Mazda's design ethos ensures that its interiors are uncluttered and clean looking. This means despite its compact proportions, it feels like there is plenty of space in the car. Front visibility is good, but rear isn't great because of the sloping roofline. Thankfully, the latter doesn't eat into rear headroom too much though, and passengers over six feet tall won't feel too claustrophobic in the back. There's certainly more space on offer than the closely-related Mazda 3 hatchback, with easier access, too, thanks to the raised height.The boot holds 430-litres, more than a Volkswagen T-Roc but a fair bit less than the slightly larger Audi Q3. It's big enough to hold a buggy and a couple of plush carry-on bags, but not much else. A folding boot floor was fitted as standard in 2020 to improve practicality, acting as a partition to stop objects rolling around. This works with varying degrees of success. There's also a powered tailgate on mid-range Sport Lux models and above.In short, the CX-30's interior is impressive. It's carried over almost completely unchanged from the Mazda 3 hatch, so you're treated to robust and premium-feeling materials, a neat dashboard layout and a very crisp central infotainment screen. The main difference is that you're sitting a little further away from the road. The interior is refreshingly uncluttered with all the controls clustered together in a logical fashion. Some of the climate control buttons could do with clearer markings, as they can be initially confused as switch blanks, but the cabin is easy to get to grips with. Depending on spec it comes with leather or fabric inside, with a large piece of soft-touch material across most of the dashboard. That's a welcome departure from the large slabs of cheap, hard plastic you'll find in the VW T-Roc, for instance. Check our website for more stock.
