Purchasing UHG423R as a retirement project in 2005, the vehicle was reassembled on a new, well covered, chassis. Arriving in the proverbial 25 boxes, it took a number of years to complete the project. Purchased at a speedometer reading of 50800, it now stands at 60800.
It was never my intention to rebuild to an original condition so some changes were made to improve reliability and convenience. A larger “Cosworth” radiator was fitted with twin fans and fifteen inch Compomotive Minilite styled wheels replaced the fourteen inch Wolfrace to enable a far wider tyre choice while retaining the original diameter. Within the past few miles, a new brake master cylinder and servo were fitted and the front callipers re-sealed. . The replaced parts were retained when possible.
The rather restrictive and unreliable wiring loom was updated with far more fuses and relays and toggle switches which replaced the original.
The interior was improved in places by replacing the original plastic trim with new OE material, some of which I still have, I was informed this was the last to be had and no longer available. The seats are as used in a Robin Hood kitcar but I have the originals which require new padding. Three point harnesses replace the original inertia reel variety.
The exterior was re-sprayed with a Volvo colour which matched the original. In all honesty the photographs show the condition to be better that it is in reality. The original “Webasto” style sunroof is in good condition.
Many years ago the car had been used for hill climbs, I believe, and it was the intention of the previous owner to take it sprinting. He had replaced the differential with a Cosworth unit which I was informed was a limited slip. For safety reasons I myself added a simple roll over bar.
The vehicle has been regularly started but unused for the past eighteen months and should be gone over to check service items. I had planned to replace the flexible fuel lines this year and refit an ignition inertia cut-out which failed a few days prior to storage. The engine and gearbox are original I believe, the gear selectors are beginning to show signs of wear however.
Unfortunately I am no longer able to tinker with the car which has given my much pleasure taking it to shows where it has always engendered interest including the award of the occasional prize and I shall be very sad to see it go.
Please don’t hesitate to contact me for further information, I am within close range of the M4 and M40 at SL71HS
