The Dodge Viper ACR

When you think of American power, cars with a V8 engine and impressive straight-line performance spring to mind. Vehicles like the Ford GT and the Chevrolet Corvette have raised the bar for American sports cars. But no vehicle has pushed the boundaries of American performance as far as the Dodge Viper ACR. With its gigantic V10 engine, the Viper offers a new dimension of the American sports car. The ACR (American Club Racer) version takes this concept even further and proves that American cars can do far more than quarter-mile races. Throughout its history, the ACR badge has characterised various generations of the Viper. Of particular note, however, is the 2016 Viper ACR, the latest and boldest version of this iconic car. The original Viper was conceived as the spiritual successor to the Shelby Cobra. With a development budget of 70 million dollars, an impressive sports car was created, which debuted in 1991 with Carroll Shelby himself at the Indianapolis 500. Over the years, the Viper evolved from a raw and brutal performance car into a slightly tamed monster thanks to modern safety systems and more everyday usability. The ACR, however, is a vehicle for purists and petrolheads. It was created uncompromisingly for the race track.

Dodge presented this version at the SEMA motor show in Las Vegas in 2014 as a concept for the new ACR. An ultra-light coupé with striking stripes, a huge rear wing and specially developed alloy wheels. The production model followed shortly afterwards: the 2016 Dodge Viper ACR, an uncompromising track tool. The revised chassis of the Viper is made from a steel frame and optimised for maximum rigidity and weight reduction. In addition, a carbon X-brace provides more stability. The bodywork is designed for lightweight construction, while aerodynamic elements such as the front splitter, diffuser and an adjustable rear wing generate massive downforce. With the optional Extreme Aero Package, downforce was increased to over 900 kilograms - more than any other production car of the time. With a width of 1,776 millimetres, the dimensions of the rear wing correspond to 1776, the year in which the United States declared its independence. It gives the vehicle a symbolic connection to American history. Like the GTS version, the 8.4-litre V10 has 654 hp and 814 NM torque. Its power transmission is handled by a manual 6-speed gearbox, which is designed for high power reserves. In order to utilise the car's full potential, the ACR has an adjustable Bilstein suspension with ten-way damping adjustment and variable ground clearance.

The ACR is equipped with powerful Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes, which provide excellent deceleration under extreme loads. Specially developed Kumho Ecsta V720 ACR tyres ensure maximum grip. The interior of the ACR is minimalist and functional. Lightweight bucket seats with five-point harnesses and reduced noise insulation emphasised the focus on racetrack performance. Nevertheless, amenities such as a touchscreen and air conditioning were retained, although these features were specially adapted to minimise the vehicle weight. It demonstrated its capabilities with a lap time of 7:01.67 minutes on the Nordschleife. The Viper ACR has proven its dominance on race tracks around the world, setting records at circuits such as Laguna Seca and Willow Springs. With 13 track records, it is the most successful American vehicle with a road licence. The Dodge Viper ACR is a tribute to the era of uncompromising super sports cars, a dinosaur in a world that is increasingly focussing on electrification and automation. Even after the end of production in 2017, the ACR remains a symbol of the pure essence of driving and an icon of American automotive engineering.
