1965 AC Cobra by AK 350 Chevrolet

The special relationship, spoken about by Presidents and Prime Ministers for generations. But really, some of the special relationships' greatest contributions to the world, are automotive.
In late 1961, Ford supplied Carroll Shelby with two V8 engines, which were destined to be fitted into cars shipped to the US by AC Cars. The AC Ace had to make do with a Bristol straight-six engine, for Shelby’s new Cobra, the V8 engines were just what the doctor ordered.
Today, original Shelby Cobras are so beloved that original examples fetch astronomical prices. Despite the production of original cars ending in 1967, a wide range of faithful replicas have remained in production since.
This particular Cobra is an AK Sportscar, it's a fibreglass-bodied car that is a precise replica of the original Cobra. Underneath, however, lies modern engineering, sourced from Jaguar. The car’s exterior is finished in Blood Red, a deep and glossy shade that beautifully highlights the 427’s signature wide-flared arches.
Polished brightwork accentents the red body,, including the single roll-over hoop, bumper overriders, and side vents. It sits on 15-inch Hallibrand wheels with black centres and polished lips, complemented by Cooper Cobra tyres sporting classic white sidewall text. The car also comes with a removable Le Mans-style hardtop, for when the weather is slightly less than Californian.
Cobras aren’t about luxury, but regardless cream leather adorns the dashboard, seats, and door panels, accented by contrasting red pinstriping. A simple aluminium gear knob pairs elegantly with the wood-rimmed Moto-Lita steering wheel, perfectly replicating the simplistic style of the original.
Under the bonnet, this Cobra is fitted with a 350ci Chevrolet small-block V8. In 2023, Vulcan Classics carried out a series of engine upgrades that included a top-end rebuild. Now the V8 features Edelbrock cylinder heads, a performer intake manifold and a Cobra air filter.
At the same time, the Tremec 5-speed manual gearbox was removed to allow for the fitment of a new clutch. The work has resulted in an enthralling driving experience, not only is the soundtrack immense, but there is power in abundance. After all, the fibreglass body helps to make this an extremely light car.
This car benefits from nearly 28 years of well-documented history. It is correctly registered as a 1965 model year historic vehicle; making it not only ULEZ exempt for use inside clean air zones, but also remarkably cheap to insure.AK Sportscars has long been celebrated for its production of exceptional Cobra replicas.
The use of Jaguar and Chevrolet components means there is extensive aftermarket support to upgrade, maintain and enjoy this car to the best of your ability and to freely turn it into your perfect Cobra.
As with all our vehicles, a full digital folder is available on request containing more images, walk-around videos, and scans of the service history. The car can also be viewed by appointment at our West London showroom.
