WESTFIELD SE
Westfield SE standard body live axle model Registered in July 2009 with four owners from registration (two of them being the previous owner) and was completed to a specification that gives a good compromise between usability on road with a bias to motorsport/track days.
The first and third owner of the car having built it and then purchased it back from its second owner in March 2015 is well known to building Westfields.
This Westfield is not going to be everybody’s cup of tea due to the track/motorsport bias of the specification, the driving experience is dominated by the noise of the induction, straight cut gearbox and wind noise. Due to the fitment of the roll cage it’s also not the easiest thing to get in and out of but once you are strapped in it is comfy enough to a full day of driving and still be able to climb out and walk away without feeling like you have been run over by a truck.
Many prospective buyers are put off by the standard body live axle cars preferring to look for the wide bodied independent rear suspension models. My experience with many years of involvement with the Westfield marque have led me to conclude the live axle cars are generally lighter and feel very similar to drive in terms of handling and ride to the independent cards and the “larger” driver can be accommodated comfortably. Many live axle narrow bodied Westfields are campaigned successfully in various sprint and race series across the UK which is a testament to their speed and handling and ride qualities. This particular car goes, stops and steers with the best of them being fairly softly set up for comfort but hard enough to crack along in “Attack Mode” on track days.
I also prefer the aesthetics of the standard bodied cars as there is extra depth to the rear wheel arches making the cars look lower and wider. This Westfield looks particularly good in its yellow and silk black colour scheme, 205x60x13 tyres and wide track front suspension.
At first I made a conscious decision not to tune the standard Ford Zetec engine (as I feel that the car has ample power for road/track day use at approx 185BHP) but to add a straight cut close ratio gearbox matched to the final drive ratio and a very lightweight flywheel. This combination beautifully utilizes the engine power with the light flywheel enhancing acceleration and engine response to the throttle. I worked hard during the build to sensibly reduce the car’s overall weight so I could get the maximum performance in terms of acceleration out of the standard engine’s power.
During the build pretty much all of the chassis components, brackets and panels were powder coated satin black so if looked after the car will look good for many years to come.
Attention was paid to ensuring the car can be worked on easily so the scuttle, dash, diffuser ect are all quickly removable to allow easy and quick access to the cars wiring and mechanical components.
The car is fast and thrilling to drive whilst still being able to return in excess of 35mpg on long runs, insurance for me is a little under £130 per year with the road tax being exempt £0 per year
