BMW 3.0 CSL

The BMW 3.0 CSL, CSL standing for Coupe Sport Leichtbau (Coupe Sport Lightweight), was created in 1972 as an homologation special built to enable the car to be eligible for the European Touring Car Championships. The car achieved victory in this competition in 1973, as well as winning Le Mans in the same year. Only 1,265 were made, of which 500 were exported to the UK. These 500 were all part of the City Pack edition, with our CSL being one of them.

Our example, finished in its original Polaris Silver, makes a great first impression. The car sits on 14-inch Alpina wheels.

The aluminium bonnet, boot lid and door skins saved weight giving the car it's CSL name. Inside the car are sculpted Scheel seats, which are in great condition, and an immaculately maintained wooden trim around the dash.

Within the car, a working period radio has also been fitted and standard electric windows which were only available in the right hand drive UK cars.

Maintained superbly by the previous owners, the care given to the car is clearly evident. In the 90s the car underwent a full restoration, the next owner spent 20k on the car to maintain its driveability, this owner was the principal of a BMW dealership. There is extensive paperwork comprising of continuous MOT certificates and BMW certified invoices. AlI restoration invoices for work done after 1990 are available.

The mechanics of the car are beyond reproach. The car starts from cold and idles up to the correct temperature, the engine runs smoothly and strong. The gearbox is smooth and precise, while the clutch is well weighted and bites as it should. The car is equipped with power steering while still allowing good feel. In keeping with the rest of the car the brakes and suspension are in very good condition and the disks and pads have plenty of material.
