Restored Matching-Numbers RHD Jaguar XK120 DHC
Initially shown as a design concept at the 1948 Earls Court Motorshow, the XK120 met with such approval that it was quickly placed into full scale production.
The first Jaguar sports car since the pre-war SS100, the XK120 claimed title as the fastest road car to date and would go on to secure Jaguars legendary status throughout the 1950’s.
Powered by the mighty 3.4Ltr. twin cam, six-cylinder XK engine and christened ‘120’ due to its top speed, the model was offered in three variants, firstly as an Open Two-Seater, then in 1951 a Fixed Head Coupe and finally in 1953, the Drop Head Coupe for the last year of production.
With the majority of sales destined for overseas clients, just 294 Right Hand Drive examples of the XK120 DHC were built for the home market.
Featuring the various refinements made to the Fixed Head Coupe together with a weatherproof folding hood, winding side windows and wooden dashboard, the Drop Head Coupe offered Jaguars finest combination of luxury open-top sports car experiences.
This original and matching-numbers Right Hand Drive XK120 DHC is the 158th model to be produced. The accompanying Heritage Certificate and original log-book confirm it was dispatched from Jaguars Browns Lane Works in December 1953. First registered in January 1954 in Northern Ireland, the XK was subsequently returned to the UK and re-registered in February 1964.
Purchased by the current vendors late father in 1994, the decision was taken to embark upon a complete body off restoration. The accompanying photographs show the extent and level of work undertaken during the following three years before the car was finally completed and ready to embark upon numerous European tours.
Unlike many similar examples, this XK120 retains its original gearbox, engine, body and chassis numbers together with many of the features the car was supplied with some sixty-seven years ago when new. An additional Kenlowe fan has been fitted and despite certain elements now showing the age of the restoration, the bodywork including paint and shut-lines remain in superb condition, the leather interior is beautifully mellowed and the mechanical condition is excellent throughout.
Finished in traditional British Racing Green with Suede green leather interior and mechanically prepared to be enjoyed extensively on long-distance events. The history file comprises service records for all work completed since the restoration with numerous receipts and invoices helping to demonstrate the amount of subsequent maintenance and care.
