What if we told you there was a sports car with a heritage that reached back a decade prior to the production of the very first Porsche 911? A car with racing pedigree that included 10 class wins at Le Mans between 1960 and the present day? A car designed to bring power and performance to the everyman, that has sold for up to $3.85m at auction? 

Now imagine, if you will, that a version of this mythical fantasy car was available with a hand-built, naturally-aspirated 7.0- (yes, seven) litre V8 engine, a six-speed manual transmission, and rear-wheel drive. Thanks to weight saving measures including a composite body, an aluminium frame, carbon composite floors and even a magnesium alloy roof, its 512hp and 470lb ft of torque was enough to see 0-62 in 3.9 seconds and a top speed of 198mph. 

Well, imagine no more, and welcome to the Corvette Z06. American cars in general, and the Corvette in particular, have long been viewed with a certain degree of suspicion by UK buyers. Cheap and cheerful, with a big ol’ lump and not much in the way of class or sophistication, or so we’ve been led to believe. But when viewed in isolation the Z06 sounds every bit the homologation variant of one of the most successful race cars of its day. As such, its advanced weight saving wasn’t limited to the structure, with a magnesium alloy engine cradle, CNC-ported heads, sodium-filled valves and titanium con-rods, valves and valve springs all contributing to a 70kg diet versus the standard C6. 

Good manners were imparted by stiffer anti-sway bars, springs and shocks, a new front splitter and larger rear spoiler. Endurance came via a dry-sump oil system, transmission cooler, functional front and rear brake ducts, cross-drilled brake discs and larger brake calipers front and rear.

So leave your preconceptions at the door and join us in appreciating this very handsome example of one of the best pound (feet) for pound (sterling) sportscars money can buy.

Summary

Those ‘in the know’ will often list off several marques that a ‘true’ petrolhead should own at least once in their life. Alfa, BMW, Porsche, Toyota, Mazda and a whole host of others regularly feature but, on these shores at least, Chevy never seems to. 

After perusing this listing, though, it shouldn’t be hard to see why the brand has sold almost two million Corvettes since 1953; a staggering figure when set against the 1.2 million 911s that Porsche has shifted since production began only a decade later.
