Overview

To assume that Porsche's iconic 911 is only good for road and track use would be to severely underestimate the car's capabilities. Yes, it excels in both of these environments, such are its inherently excellent driving characteristics, but with the right setup it can crush off-road too, as this 1986 Dakar-inspired 911 so thoroughly proves.

Fully kitted out in order to compete in the Maroc Challenge last year, the car continues a rallying legacy that was kick started by Porsche back in the '60s and which culminated in 1984 with a heavily modified 911 – known as the 953 – specifically designed to compete in the Paris-Dakar Rally, one of the most gruelling motorsport challenges in the world, proving with a win that the 911 really could do it all. Built as an homage to that very car, complete with Rothman's livery, this Dakar 911 looks every bit the rally-bred hero and is reportedly mechanically sound and driving well.

Described as the Dakar of the 70’s for today’s adventurers, the Maroc Challenge is an event open to everyone, regardless of vehicle, preparation and experience making it accessible to us mere mortals. This particular Porsche underwent a full restoration prior to being turned into a safari car in order to compete in 2025 and as such has been given the full treatment. Presenting now as an incredibly accomplished rally weapon it's ready for whatever other challenges you care to throw at it and would make a wonderful addition to any Porsche collection.

Complete with stacks of supporting paperwork, including for an engine rebuild in 2021/2022, the fact that this car actually competed in such a unique and demanding adventure as the Maroc should tell you all you need to know about just how competent of a machine it really is.
