Overview

While all versions of the BMW ‘E46’ 3 Series are great cars, and the M3 especially so, there’s one derivative that’s spoken of in hushed tones by fans of the marque – and that’s the M3 CSL.

Unveiled in 2003, the CSL – an abbreviation for “Coupé Sport Leichtbau” or “Coupe Sport Lightweight” – was a limited-edition, track-focused development of the already magnificent E46 M3. Only 1,383 were made, of which 422 were right-hand-drive UK-spec cars.

The key to its brilliance was an advanced weight-reduction programme that was significantly more than just taking out unnecessary mass. Instead, composite materials were used, including a carbon fibre roof, rear bulkhead and boot floor. Other lightweighting measures consisted of thinner glass, a stripped-out interior and lighter suspension components, giving the car a kerb weight of just 1,385kg, compared with the 1,549kg of a standard M3.

There were tweaks under the bonnet, too, with the 3.2-litre straight-six S54 engine receiving uprated camshafts, enlarged exhaust valves and a lightweight exhaust system fashioned from thinner steel than the regular M3 item, along with a hard polymer air intake system. Acceleration from 0-60 mph took just 4.8 seconds, and the car’s Nürburgring lap times were among the fastest of any production car of its era.

This one is an absolute corker. Bought by its previous owner direct from a BMW dealer in 2004 with just 1,700 miles on the clock, they kept the car for 22 years and had it fastidiously maintained, retaining every single invoice to build up a comprehensive file of history. The car presents superbly and must be one of the best available CSLs on the market right now. Worthy of attention for the induction noise alone, this is an opportunity to acquire a fabulous example that should be a gold-plated investment as well as a hoot to drive.
