Overview

The Porsche 987 Boxster didn't just look like its 986 predecessor from a distance but rather felt like a continuation of the same idea. Which was rather the point. Porsche knew they'd struck gold with the mid-engined roadster formula, so when the second generation arrived in late 2004, they kept the silhouette familiar while delivering a car that was eighty per cent new underneath. Subtle Carrera GT-influenced styling brought bigger wheelarches and a more assertive front end, lending a striking visual cohesion to the Boxster design. A wider track, larger wheels and tyres, and new variable-ratio steering sharpened an already impressive chassis.

In S trim, the 987.1 packed a 3.2-litre naturally aspirated flat-six producing 280 bhp and 236 lb ft of torque — good for 0-62mph in 5.5 seconds. Impressive figures, certainly, but what really sets the Boxster S apart has always been the way those numbers translate into the actual experience. That mid-mounted engine delivers a mechanical, richly detailed soundtrack right behind your head while simultaneously gifting the chassis with the kind of natural balance that makes every corner an invitation. It's a car that flatters without patronising, rewards without punishing, and somehow manages to feel every bit as exciting on a familiar B road as it does the first time you experience it.

This particular example comes in a very fetching shade of metallic blue and was specified with extended tan leather inside. It’s a great combination and remains in lovely condition, with the wheels a particular highlight. With a fully stamped service book, all with main dealers save for one from a specialist, it’s clearly been well cared for and should be ready for its next owner to take to the roads straight away.

Summary

There's no shortage of 987 Boxster S models out there. But ones specified with extended tan leather, giving the cabin genuine warmth and individuality, offer something a little different. It makes a meaningful difference to how this car feels from behind the wheel, and paired with the characterful 3.2-litre flat-six, it's a combination that appeals to the senses.

With the added practicality of wireless CarPlay, this is a Boxster S that's ready to be enjoyed right now. Roof down, tan leather catching the light, that flat-six winding up behind your shoulders — it doesn't take much imagination to see why this one is such an attractive proposition.
