Overview

One of the most acclaimed and legendary sports cars, not just in the JDM realm but in the grand automotive landscape as a whole, the Toyota Supra is rightly revered for its ability to be tuned and for decades enthusiasts and big power junkies have been extracting silly amounts of performance from these renowned Japanese sportsters.

First breaking cover in 1978 as the Celica Supra in Japan it wasn't until the fourth generation – now its own model entirely – that people really started to take notice, not least in part to its appearance in the Point-Break-on-wheels smash hit phenomenon The Fast and the Furious. This prompted many a petrolhead to seek a Supra out for themselves in order to try and build a “ten-second car”, a feat made achievable by the excellent 3.0-litre 2JZ-GTE twin-turbo in-line six-cylinder engine under the bonnet.

Much to the modern classic aficionado's dismay, however, Toyota pulled the plug on the Supra in 2002 and that was all she wrote. That was until 2019 when the Japanese giant unveiled a new Supra at the Detroit Motor Show. There was much rejoicing but could the new Supra live up to the hype? Spoiler alert: yes, yes it could.

Sharing its platform with BMW's Z4 in a joint venture that would be mutually beneficial, the new Supra – officially titled the GR Supra due to the involvement of Toyota's motorsport arm Gazoo Racing – is nothing short of brilliant. Available with a choice of BMW engines, from a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo to a 3.0-litre in-line six-cylinder, again with a turbo, performance is excellent across the board, with the latter six-pot delivering around 340bhp.

It's a superbly engineered front-engined, rear-wheel drive sports car with perfect 50:50 weight distribution and a wonderfully low centre of gravity which means it handles as well as it goes. Not only that but it really does look the part, too.  This particular example is a 2020 Jarama Racetrack Edition – a special edition of the Supra in a higher spec with unique styling elements and the aforementioned top of the line engine that was limited to just 90 for the European market and a mere 30 for UK customers, making this an incredibly rare opportunity. 

Presenting in stunning condition across the board and complete with full Toyota service history the car has been fastidiously maintained with the vendor reporting that a house purchase forces sale. With such limited use – the car has covered less than 12K miles – it would be perfect for a collector or anyone who's a fan of properly-engineered performance coupes that are dripping in well-earned kudos.

• The bodywork is free from any major damage with only one small stone chip to the front bumper and another on the bonnet to note

• There are a number of drilled holes to the front apron as indicated by photos 59-62 where the plate was mounted from factory; that plate carrier will come with the car so the buyer has the option to screw it back in, thus covering the holes

• All shut lines appear uniform

• There is no evidence of any corrosion to the bodywork

• All glasswork remains free from damage aside from two minor stone chips that were filled last year

• The factory 19” alloy wheels present exceptionally well with only one small scratch on the offside rear to note where a service technician put the car on a ramp according to the vendor

• The vendor reports that any bird lime is immediately removed and the car is hand washed using the two bucket method as well as being waxed and detailed once per year

• The vendor also reports that the car starts and stops without fault, the idle is a nice low tone from the factory and there is some exhaust burble on change down or cold start but these are tasteful and not anti-social

Summary

A continuation of an iconic marque the Toyota GR Supra further propagates that legend and this rare, limited edition model is definitely worth a look if you're after a low mileage, well maintained example that stands out from the crowd. These cars look set to appreciate in value, especially the special editions produced in such limited numbers and would make a great investment for any enthusiast or collector.
