Overview

It's hard to believe that a car manufacturer as prestigious and indeed as successful as Porsche was once on the ropes. For many, especially the younger among you, will only have seen Porsche at its triumphant best, with a world-beating roster of cars and a hugely revered motorsport presence, but that wasn't always the case.

We don't have to go that far back either. As recently as the early to mid-nineties the German giant wasn't doing so well. Its line-up was looking distinctly geriatric and the weekly sales graphs were not exactly heading up and to the right. Something needed to change. Porsche needed to bring something fresh to the table. Something modern yet harking back to the glory days of the company's history. Well that something turned out to be the Boxster.

Taking inspiration from the legendary 356 Speedster the Boxster was a bit of a revelation for Porsche. Released in 1996, the Boxster (BOXer-engined roadSTER) was the company's first roadster since the 914 back in the '70s and it was a massive success, going on to become Porsche’s biggest seller for almost a decade.

An incredibly engaging, mid-engined two-seater sports car, the Boxster quickly earned a loyal following thanks to its well-balanced nature and peppy driving characteristics. The beauty of the Boxster lies not in its outright performance credentials however, but in its inherent drive-ability and it proved to be a very capable car that could cut it both as a sporty weekend toy and as a daily driver.

Still being made today, such is its popularity, it's the original 986 model that is arguably the purest incarnation and as a second-hand buy it represents an incredibly accessible way into Porsche ownership. This particular low mileage, usable 2000 example is one such car and comes equipped with the later 2.7-litre, water-cooled flat-six producing 220bhp, which means 0-60mph in around six-and-a-half seconds. A five speed manual gearbox bolsters that aforementioned engagement and a full compliment of service stamps completes the package.
