Overview

It's amazing how transformative a spicy engine can be when shoehorned into an historically un-sporty car and the automotive landscape is full of such examples. Look at the Lotus Cortina for example. Or the Volvo 850 T5-R. The base models of both of these were nothing to particularly write home about in terms of performance but they have become legendary chapters in the car world thanks to some under-bonnet fettling.

It's a process that continues to this day with many manufacturers producing souped-up versions of their everyday cars but some stand just that little bit taller than the rest and shout that little bit louder. Cars like the Toyota GR Yaris for instance. Purpose built to allow Toyota to return to the WRC, the GR Yaris (with GR indicating Toyota's Gazoo Racing motorsport division's involvement) was developed in concert with none other than four-time World Rally Championship winner Tommi Mäkinen and the results were simply spectacular.

A 260bhp, all-wheel-drive supermini, the GR Yaris was homologated in order to meet regs which meant the car buying public got a chance to nab one of the 2,500 road-going examples that were initially built as a result. Featuring a 1.6-litre, turbocharged three-cylinder engine mated to a six-speed manual gearbox and all-wheel drive, the GR Yaris's 0-60mph time was a naughty 5.5 seconds and if you kept your toe in could hit a top speed of 143mph (limited). A sweet, well-balanced chassis and tuned suspension completed the package and its legend has since been duly cemented.

This particular 2021 example not only includes the factory “Circuit” package – which means a Torsen limited-slip differential front and back alongside stiffer suspension and forged alloy wheels – but it has also been significantly modified to really lean into that motorsport heritage. Highlights include an Eventuri induction kit, Turbosmart blow-off valve, Airtec intercooler, Whifbitz exhaust with GPF delete and a Whifbitz ECU remap taking peak power to a whopping 328bhp. And that's just the mechanicals. The car has also been fitted with an SW Motorsports half roll cage, Whifbitz style TOM's rear spoiler, TOM's rear bumper ducts, and Maxton body kit (front splitter, side skirts and rear diffuser), as well as numerous interior tweaks.

The full spec list can be found below but suffice to say this little monster has had its already incredibly keen claws sharpened and an extra couple of rockets stuck up its you know what. Not only that but the car presents superbly across the board, comes complete with full service history and has covered just 21K miles. It's quite the thing.

Summary

Rightly revered and already dripping in rally pedigree this Toyota GR Yaris has been further enhanced thanks to a whole host of tasteful performance and styling modifications. A truly brilliant car to begin with here is an opportunity to really stand out from the crowd. In the words of the seller the car makes the commute the best part of every single day and never fails to put a big stupid grin on the face, turning heads wherever it goes. Sounds about right if you ask us - a proper little show stealer.
