Overview

Mercedes' A-Class “subcompact executive hatchback”, to give it its full descriptive title, has been around since 1996, believe it or not. And while that very first model had some, how shall we say, handling issues, the latest incarnation is a much more focussed and assured animal, representing one of the best performers in the class.

The current fourth-generation A-Class, launched in 2018, is available with a range of four-cylinder engines, including a 2.0-litre turbo AMG incarnation producing over 300bhp. This souped-up version also sports Mercedes' excellent 4MATIC all-wheel drive system, allowing the AMG models to accelerate to 60mph from parked in just 4.7seconds. Who said the hot hatch was dead?!

This particular car, one such AMG 4MATIC example, is in excellent condition throughout and in perfect working order. A 2024 model that's covered just 14K miles it's only just bedded, with the vendor stating that the only reason for sale is sadly due to it not being suitable for elderly relatives.

The car also features the AMG Premium equipment package which includes a larger 10.25” instrument cluster, ambient lighting with a choice of 64 colours, illuminated door sills, keyless entry, a mid-range sound system and rear armrest. Summary

With the A35 AMG 4MATIC Mercedes has proved that the hot hatch isn't dead. Far from it. Here is a well-built, hugely capable and really rather practical family hatchback that feels just at home on a twisty B road as it does popping to the shops for a pint of milk and a Ginsters. This one is barely a year old, has limited mileage, full service history and looks to be in superb condition throughout.
