Overview
Mercedes-AMG have a history of shoehorning large engines into two-seater roadsters, a practice that they started with the R171 in 2004, when it appeared at the Geneva Motor Show with a grumbling M113 5.4-litre V8 engine hidden under the bonnet. Despite its snarling exhaust note and respectable performance figures of 360bhp, some observed that it never quite set hearts racing as much as the numbers promised.
Determined to rectify this wrong, Mercedes announced the R172-generation SLK in 2012, which featured over 400bhp from its M152 5.5-litre V8 engine, along with gorgeous ‘mini SLS’ bodywork, an updated interior and improved economy thanks to cylinder shutdown technology, giving it the (factory quoted) ability to register 33mpg on a long run. Whilst it was actually heavier than its predecessor, the improved output figures, quicker steering rack and other small tweaks made a marked improvement in on-road performance.
This particular example was registered new in December 2014, and has enjoyed the care of just one owner from new. Specified in Designo White Metallic with a red leather interior and having been serviced exclusively by main dealers from new, you’d be forgiven for thinking this is a car that is half its age, thanks to both its condition and Mercedes’ timeless design.

Summary
Often cited as being a ‘mini’ SLS AMG and with good reason from both a styling and soundtrack perspective, the SLK55 is one of AMGs hits from the early 2010s, utilising the same engine as Mercedes’ 63-badged offerings but without the turbochargers, yet still producing over 400bhp - quite remarkable for a two-seat, drop-top car that would look at home around the South of France or winding its way through the Black Mountain Pass in Wales.
Offered for sale by its one-and-only owner from new and with a full Mercedes-Benz main dealer service history, this is a cosseted and relatively low-mileage example of one of AMG’s roadster hits. Get it whilst you can…
